mk5 transit chassis section ??

hiya lads, can anyone tell me what sort of thickness steel i would need for chassis section on my transit , done a lot of welding lately but the section behind the o/s/rear wheel isnt too clever, bump stop came off in my hand !! when grinding the rust away it seem to be in layers?? any info appreciated gaz

If i remember correctly 2mm for the chassis ,at least thats what i used on mine....

I would think 2mm will be ample.

hiya gordon, would you cut this section out and weld the new piece in or patch over with the 2mm? cheers gaz

if you just plate over it chances are the same will happen again water between the 2 plates and rot from the inside out

If its for an mot ...and your likely to only keep the van a couple of years plate it .....if you intend keeping the van longer ,the correct way is to cut out all the rust and weld in a section

I had a similar problem with my brothers LDV I started out by cutting out the double skin, welding the ends of the skins up and then letting in some 2mm plate, but as he only wants it for a couple of years to finish his house, and there was a lot to do , I ground back to clean metal then built hamber and patch over the top, by the time that patch would have rusted the rest of the chassis would be gone anyways, thats what was my thinking at the time.

I used to use 2mm also on Transits,but,moved to Ivecos five years ago.Now we don`t have to weld chassis or cabs.
Every new version of the Transit has got worse for reliability and corrosion.You couldn`t use one in a bank robbery nowadays,you`d be caught before you got to the end of the street.

avenue panels at rushden will do that section.prices are not bad.
