for how long the narrow (width) of the plate is i would have started on the end welded continusly around the corner and across the face in one this way instead of 4 stop starts you have 2 to blend in and as you stated stagger your starts so the next run around would start/stop on the opporsite corners. this will also reduce the dropp off at the weld endsI always also stagger the start / ends of runs where possible on long runs to eliminate potential weaknesses.
