what do you all use for notching pipe?

say i have 2 2" pipes and I want to weld them at 90degrees what do you use for notching them

difficult to notch them right with an angle grinder

anyone made a DIY notcher

looking for a tool for notching pipe for say if I was making a door frame from piping

something like this is what I would have in mind, no hole saws to worry about

I use a hole saw of the same diameter as the pipe in my milling machine, but it could also be done in a pillar drill, as long as the pipe is clamped solid and you slow the drill right down.

I've been there with the angle grinder and it's not good.

Flap disc on an angle grinder, iit's as fast as anything else when you get the knack for it, in fact, faster than most dedicated tools.

I built a CBH Notcher a few years ago. I've since worn it out, but then I have notched a fair bit of tube.

I've just bought a Baileigh TN76-H £176 but it's a hafty bit of kit to say the least

hacksaw with appropriate blades, and a good selection of sharp files. I'm getting moderately quick at it now, and I doubt I could do it much quicker in a jig by the time I did the setup for each one. On Heavy wall stuff I occasionally use either an angle grinder or a die grinder.

Big Pete you beat me to it.
I used to mess about with angle grinders, it takes ages. Cut each corner off at 45 degrees, a bit of file work and job done and it looks good.

^Or just cut/grind the ends at 45 with the angle grinder and round the top off with the pad whilst you're at it?

If its only a handfull I find a grinder is quicker then setting anything up in a notcher.

I bought an Eastwood tube notcher from Frost Automotive for £80, and its saved me so much time. Wouldn't do without it now

I just made a tubular sliding gate, needed several 90deg notched joins. Used a Starrett type hole saw in the pillar drill. I find it easier to cut over length and drill a complete hole. Half holes have a habit of removing teeth and the imbalance usually makes a skewed notch. This is probably from resting the tube in the clamp rather than a dedicated rigid holding set up.

I have the same bit of kit. Very good for what it does.

Not cheap but then it's used on a regular basis. If you're just notching a few one off's, I'd use a grinder and file.

small pipes (up to 1"),I normally use a suitable file,on larger pipes I use an angle grinder and finish with a file ,I do use a program called tubemitre ..which is great up to A4 size as you print an outline to cut to

I have a friend who bought one of them from a crowd in Cork for around €300
and swears by it for notching 2 in. galvanize pipe

I prefer to use the bandsaw to notch pipe it's slower but when you get used to it it works very well

walsh engineering prices online are v expensive just put it up as a link to what I was talking about, I would think if you went to the shop you would get it better, anyother brands of the same thing floating about?

Paid £170 for mine from Mantech machinery. That was in 2010, so whether they still sell them or not. Can't be sure.

Stil stoopid money as I said just bought a TH76-H from Baileigh for 175quid.

I don't think there is a cut it will not do, up to 3"

I use and sell this one below, Its invaluable when making roll cages & tube chassis's, Had mine for about 15 years and its still cuts perfect, They are £100

Why anyone that notches a lot would cut and file is beyond me as it takes around 30-45 seconds to notch any angle with this.
I use my cordless drill on mine.
