partway through building new wood burner

here is the progress of my new wood buring stove for my garage
it made form a 47kg propane bottle

As you can see I have fitted a small baffle I have not yet cut the hole for the flue

The to holes Im cutting out are for the air inlet that will fee through the fire box then up hopefull to aid secondry combustion

All I am needing to get is some 4" steel pipe to make the fle on the back only need about a meter of it.Cant find any locally

Wood prefers to burn on a flat plate with air coming from above, rather than on a grid with air coming from below. Vice-Versa for coke &c.

Ive done it so I can shut the air off from below so the base is sealed.So the only incoming air is through the pipes.So it gets air from above.I will be putting an air-intake in the bottom so i can also feed from the bottom for coal/coke/charcoal or visa versa

the air intakes the pipes go through the fire and then up where the air will exit pre heated by the fire.To hopefully aid secondry combustion

I see, I didn't realise those were pipes in the drawing.

I'd be inclined to put some steel mesh on top of the rebar to allow ash through but stop bits of wood falling into the ashpan. It could be taken out to burn coal &c.

stock 4" od 1.5mm wall steel tube for exhausts made by timax
non aluminised plain welded mild steel 2m length is £20 near as dammit
they are open to trade and retail
this is correct as i have the same in my shed at the moment
it makes 3 x 600mm flues that will last a good while but not forever lol

You can buy exhaust tubing up to 5" diameter, lorry service place may have some offcuts. I'd go bigger than 4" on a stove that size. I saw this on BB as well, looks like a useful and fun project.

daveAI does have good designs.Im looking online at how the proper wood burners are built to improve combustion especially secondry combustion to get more heat out and controlling the airflow

most wood burners seem to have a baffle and the often the air is drawn through pipes in the firebox and then fed to the top of the fire to improve combustion as its heats while its still in the pipe.Coals and charcoal is air fed from the bottom and wood from the top.If you look at wood gas burners you will see what I mean.Instead of any wood gas being expelled straight up the flue Im trying to make use of it.

I'm intrigued as to why pre-heating the air in the tubes improves combustion.

Combustion depends on the mass of air, not the volume so I reckon cooling the air should improve combustion. Like you use intercoolers on turbo engines and cars seem to run better on cooler days.

a lot of the modern stoves preheat the air to improve the 2nd burn.

dont know if it has anything to do with flashpoint. but introducing cold air will lower the temp inside more so than preheated air so if we have hot gasses and hot air it should be easiest to ignite.
I know cooler air is denser thats why a turbo has an intercooler to cool the air so you can get more in the cylinder also with a car if you had hot air you would prob get pre ignition ie pinking.

Seems fair enough!

Also with an internal combustion engine you want to get as much mass in the cylinder as possible to get the maximum expansion to do the work.

In a stove you just want a burn, an explosion would be a Bad Thing.

Mind you, some of the designs I've seen for oil burning stoves use a vac motor as a blower.................

just order some today just cost £28 inc VAT pick up tomorrow dont have it on stock.I did ask about 5" was a daft price about £58 so will stick with 4 "
