does anyone remember the rawlplug welders mate it was a 12 volt dc welder that ran of a car battery . my mate had one. he pinched the neighbours car battery to run it to weld sidecar onto his motorbike needless 2 say it fell apart

I had one and it worked



















Just as well as connecting the electrode straight to the battery.

My next door neighbour had something similar looking that connected to a 240v welder to weld thin steel with a 1.6mm rod and it worked for car bodywork. It was like a solenoid that pulsed the arc.

Yes , I had one years ago out of army surplus in the Exchange & Mart it was useful for light stuff and for brazing , mine was an American jobby that used 24 volts . I sold it years later for far more than I paid for it.

Apparently you can get similar results with 2 or 3 car batteries in series, jump leads and a rod.

Common amongst 4x4ers, apparently it's a handy trick if you need an emergency weld to get you home. But I can't see the batteries lasting long as it's effectively a dead short, plus they might explode

I've fallen foul of that before. Accidentally welded a socket and extension bar to the positive battery terminal

Rawlplug bought this from XP.It was possible to weld at 24 volts with good batteries or braze at 18 v using a spring wound steel resistor coil in the earth lead, adjusted by moving theple could muster two fully charged good batteries. IT WAS BRILLIANT if connected to a welding Xformer as recommended. It was almost impossible to stick the rod to the workpiece as it continually interrupted the arc.

Its Achilles heel was people who expected to weld using scrap, flat car batteries which could not have welded your watch strap to the car.

I welded a new floor pan into a Frog Eyed Sprite with one of those in 1970 !!! Floor pan bent up out of 1.5 mm steel for a packet of fags by the works engineering shop AND the Sprite passed it's MOT

It inspired me to make my first arc welder from a huge transformer out of the scrap bin at work (Cost ten shillings!) - I stripped the secondary off and wound back copper tape insulated by painting it with polyurethane paint and put the lot in a bent up box full of transformer oil scrounged when they replaced it in the works substation. I tapped the secondary at several points and brought them to terminals on the lid. It actually performed rather well. Used it to weld the chassis leg of my brothers MG-TC. Eventually sold it for a tidy sum in Exchange and Mart
