Triangular Box Section

Looking for some equilateral triangular box section, about 50mm on edge. Does anyone know a supplier for a short (100mm) length? Bay of evil is not giving anything useful.

I could TIG something together but I'm not that great and it needs to look half decent

Suggestions gratefully received.

You could get a suitable pice of angle and weld pice on the open side.

I used to make triangular section components for a packaging machine I used to build, made from 50 x 3 black flat 800mm long and fully welded with mig, to keep them straight you need to weld all 3 corners, so an angle and a flat doesn't really work too well, tip the job up a bit so that you are welding downhill, keeps the weld flat and lets you turn up the power so that you can move faster
Flap discs are not the best things for this kind of work, 36 grit fibre discs are much better.

Cripes I bet that's eyewateringly expensive coming from Malaysia. This is the other half's idea and "could you do it by Wednesday?" Sigh it's a good job I love her.

Paul, did you abut the flat and use the MIG's thickness to fill in or did you put a sixty degree edge on it?

He would need to use 3 pieces of flat stock or it wouldn't be an equal lateral triangle

No prep, just used the natural vee created at the corners, these had a slight radius on each corner when finished, end plates welded in with a shaft right through, (imagine a triangular conveyor roller) and were then rubber coated,

Ahh excellent. That sounded a lot easier in my head. I've only got pure Ar for the MIG as I'm set up for TIG but I think the higher bead might be helpful in this case - I need a sharp corner on each side and the item is ornamental not structural.

That's exactly what I'd imagined Paul. I'll be using 5mm plate as that's what I've got available. This will be an interesting exercise for me to say the least

Still worth it though. OH is going to do the pads on the car in return, woo hoo!

5mm is quite a bit wider, I would probably take the corners off, it will make the weld smaller and help with distortion, you want to blast down it as quick as possible to keep the heat down.
