UV light and overalls.

Over the years I have noticed that I get through a set of overalls about every 12 months. They get burned and worn etc then usually they suddenly start to fall to pieces typically snag a leg on the bench and they rip massively. This happens a few times and in the bin they go.
is the UV light degrading the fabric?

it could be. we use UV to detec cracks in cast iron in work, and the guys on that cell are allowed a new set every 6 months, wheres as us leccies are only allowed a new pair every 24 months, so it may be something to do with the light

I've noticed it "bleaches" the colour out of dark overalls so probably does damage the fabric?

Better that the UV degrades your overalls than it degrading your skin.

I've noticed the same. Also working in a dusty atmosphere also seems to wear them out quickly.

I used to doss at a mates house when I had time off, working away. I couldn't understand why all my clothes were falling to pieces in months.

I then found his mum, filling the washing machine with Bleach

She wasn't the brightest of women

Yes, UV will break down the fibres of the fabric if they aren't UV resistant.

I get through about 4 half decent pairs a year.

Heat, sparks, oil.... none of does any good.

Did have some cheapo ones, which the UV from pulse welders bleached to a very pale lilac on area where exposed to it the most.

The left shoulders and arms of my overalls go almost white within a month. Not cheapys either.
Probably go through 4-5 pairs a year. They tend to get torn around the waist from snagging on things. Once they get a little tear, it seems to turn into a gaping hole within no time at all.

I use the Bell overalls that i sell, great quality and hard wearing, I havn't noticed any bleaching though.

For a big session of welding I use a chrome leather jacket. Bit uncomfortable, especially in summer but impervious to UV !!

Yeah they are good, I've got 3 pair and i just chuck them in the wash every 3 days, They are only £35 a pair so not dear really, also come in Red & Yellow
