Wire speed trim pot on MIG SIP Weldmate T130p?

Hi there.

My wire feed speed is not as slow as I would like it to go on minimum. Does my welder have one of those trim pots that I can twiddle with to slow it down?

Its a MIG SIP Weldmate T130p.

There won't be a lot on the circuit board. On my SIP130 the trimmer is mounted end on. Try trimming it until the low speed wire just crawls. (Mind the 240V in there etc - itterate with it unplugged).​

I have been getting slug type welds with bad penetration due to the too fast speed, even on thin steel (I assume this is the problem) so if I can manage to sort the trim pot out and get rid of my slug infestation it will be a great relief.

Machine is working fine at the moment.

A surprisingly small amount of turn was needed on the pot to bring the feed to a crawl on the slowest position. I dont understand why it is not set at the factory like this.

A brace for the feed rollers is next. The thick lead in the torch came off from where the wire goes into the liner thing so the terrible crimped collar was replaced with a small jubilee clip. This seems to be holding its own quite well.

Not clever enough to do the separate power thing for the feed roller so will just soldier on. Maybe i am a bit harsh on the old SIP sometimes, but it has earned its cost several times over in the short while i have had it. Wonder whats next?!

That trim pot may be 1k ohm. Many come with that and users replace it with 100 ohm. The 1k is too sensitive and can vary with temp.

Looks like Malcolm has already made the change.

No that's how it came (though I picked it up second hand). I think it's somewhere around 1998 build so they might have altered things since.

Yeh, i got the feeling that even a mild knock on the machine could possibly cause the pot to adjust itself. There wasnt much resistance to turn at all.

Where would i get a 100k trimmer pot suitable for it? Maplin maybe?

You want 100 ohm not 100k.

I have an SIP 150 Weldmate. I have done the capacitor mod and it has made a difference but still need to slow wire feed. This is the one 100 ohm trimpot I can find -

That's my SIP finished (in a good way)

I did the power supply mod, new liner, torch kit, earth cable and clamp all last year and all made a big difference.
Only just changed the trim pot and fitted a roller brace this afternoon and it's running great! Much more progressive speed control and the wire kicks in at the right speed immediately.

I've done the capacitor/diode/relay mod to the wire feed circuit and as well replaced the 1k trimpot with a 100 ohm job on my SIP 150 and found the welder excellent to date. However I have taken on a job which requires significant welding of 1/4" steel. I have done a fair amount now with flux core but would like to finish with gas and I find i cannot get my wire speed low enough. I am thinking I need the additional 200 ohm resistor piggybacking the 100 ohm trimpot but being an electrical troglodyte I require some additional understanding (help) - the trimpot 'legs' are labelled 1, 2 ,3 - which 'legs' do I attached the resistor to? Is the resistor 'polarity sensitive' - ie can it be inserted either way or does it need to go in a specific direction? Thans in advance.

Wow that was quick only taken 3yrs and a few mths !! resistors are unidirectional you should be able to work out where the resistor needs to go in circuit simply with a multi meter, so when you screw the trim pot, if it increases or decreases, legs 1-3 are usually total resistance ie 100 ohm , then 2 is the adjusted leg which goes up or down depending on the required resistance.

Thanks for that ... yeah doesn't do a lot and usually only body metal. I took on this heavier job and found it a bit deficient.

Yeah A lot of the smaller migs dont have proper adjustments years ago I had a snap-on mig that had preset burn back control and was a pain when doing thin steel manual 'pulse' method welding. So I worked out the circuit and removed capacitors to get what I wanted and it was a completely different machine after.
