Wiring help Please !

Hi All
I have just rebuilt a tyre changing machine and am trying to wire up the new motor .

It is fitted with a drum switch for forward and reverse.

From the drum switch I have four wires.

I have numbered the wires from the drum switch as they are on it.
When the foot switch is pressed for clockwise turn I get:

2-L
3-N
8-N
12-L

When then foot switch is lifted for anti clockwise turn I get:

2-N
3-N
8-L
12-L

From the new motor I have four wires :

Red U1
Red U2
Blue Z1
Blue Z2

And a capacitor with one blue and one yellow wires.

On the terminal block to the motor I have six posts marked from top left to right:

W2/Z2 U2 V2


U1 V1 W1/Z1


Can anyone offer any advice as I am going round in circles !

You were right the second time

I am assuming you have a single phase motor with a main set of windings and a start set of windings. You need to connect the capacitor in line with the start set of windings (normally on the +ve side) - you can tell which are the start windings as they will have a higher resistance than the main windings

I am assuming that with the peddle not pressed, all of the terminals are dead?

You can see the polarity change on terminals 2 and 8, and fixed polarity for 3 and 12, hence you connect one set (with one set being 1 red and 1 blue wire) of the motor windings to 2 and 8 and the other set to 3 and 12, the start windings need to go via the capacitor, you can then test to see if the motor goes in the correct direction, if not swap one set of the wires around (i.e swap U1 and Z1 OR U2 and Z2 - if you do both the motor will still run in reverse!)

From the new motor I have four wires :

Red U1
Red U2
Blue Z1
Blue Z2

As above, you will probably have 1 set of start windings and 1 set of main windings, the rating plate on the motor should confirm its a single phase motor?

And a capacitor with one blue and one yellow wires.

The capacitor goes in series with the start windings. See if there are markings on the capacitor for positive and negative

On the terminal block to the motor I have six posts marked from top left to right:

W2/Z2 U2 V2


U1 V1 W1/Z1

The above terminal block is marked for a both 1 phase (U1 U2 Z1 Z2) and 3 ( U1 V1 W1 U2 V2 W2) phase supplys, hence the number of terminals, but it gives enough posts to wire the motor. In essence you need

T12 ------ Capacitor ------- Motor Start Winding ------ T3
T8 ------ Motor Main Winding ------ T2

But if the motor turns in the wrong direction change it to be

T12 ------ Capacitor ------- Motor Start Winding ------ T3
T2 ------ Motor Main Winding ------ T8

I should add, if there are no markings on the capacitor it should function connected either way around, I just can not remember if there is a convention on wire colours

This is how three phase motors are wired, they don't use capacitors.

In my diagram in post #2 Cst is the start capacitor and C the run capacitor



To reverse a three phase motor, simply swap two of the phases over.

With 4 wires from the motor marked as U and Z it is single phase not 3 phase, hence the need for a capacitor

A 3 phase mototr would normally have 6 terminals and SD links

Yes it is a single phase motor , sorry forgot that bit

And yes you are correct with the pedal not pressed all wires are dead.

Hi peoples, sorry for jumping in on an old thread but i'm struggling. I have the same problem as the op had & this thread is the closest on the internet to the answer I've found.

Single phase tyre machine with a Bretas, I think, drum switch terminals numbered 2 3 7 8 12 & one un-numbered. The motor is a cap start cap run with the terminals marked the same as the op's.

I can understand the basics of this thread so far but where I'm struggling is which terminal numbers on the switch do my neutral & live wires go to? If as earlier in the thread 2 3 8 12 are being used that only leaves me number 11 & the un-numbered terminal for my line in wires, which doesn't seem to work.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
