Writing with weld

Want to do a plate for the VIN on the Sandrail in weld (MIG). Probably on 3mm steel as that is what I have, any hints or tips please.

write it out with chalk first then follow it !

I'd either buy some letter and number stamps or ask if anyone who has some can make a plate and send it to you. I cant imagine a welded vin looking very good and it would be very large. Its your car though, I don't mean to sound unhelpful.

Bad news for distortion in the wrong spot and easy ground and sanded off

The trick is to weld cold so that the letters stay prominent and you don't put too much heat in. The problem arries when using a spattery process (try getting spatter out of the middle of an "e" for example. Dry markers are good to follow as they don't seem to have adverse effects with the welding. I've done this with tig many times and it can look stunning.

But if its in a specific place, it could easily be found with a bit of nitric acid...
