How to delete old hard drives

I want an off-site backup, anything kept at home is vulnerable to fire, theft etc.

I use a local HDD to store all data that needs backing up...it's then encrypted locally and backed up to the cloud.

For this I use iDrive...what's really cool is the cloud backup maintains all my file directories etc...i believe it also allows roll backs but never needed that. So if I just need 1 file I can just download it instead of faffing about with compressed files etc.

It's a neat system...just quietly does it's thing. The 2 times I've needed it I was able to insert a blank HDD in my PC and recreate what was there with all the directories etc.

Only word of caution...the encryption key is held only by the user....lose it and all the data will be inaccessible

It is but buy a fire box against fire, for the other, encrypt it, store elsewhere against theft.

is it hard drive back up offsite or computer offsite backup

any hard drive can be offsite but its always vunerable same with a built pc ( fire theft )

whenever im making back ups i always back up via another pc offline so offline pc isnt infected by the online pc
an off site hard drive would need a pc to transfer from one hard drive to another

your 3rd hard drive is just another further back up of the important files

up to you if you encrypt the info, remember this encryption dosnt stop a wipe of the disk

I want safe storage of my images from camera SD cards, I currently copy them to a "BT cloud" folder on my PC hard drive which backed them up to the cloud, this is the facility that BT are ending.

Call me paranoid but at the same time I copy them to a WD passport and when an SD card fills up I replace it with a new one so the old ones are never overwritten, I also have a NAS drive on my home network so at least 4 copies of every image.

I am looking for recommendations for cloud storage not HDD's/PC stored at a mates house or in the shed.

Make your own copy, update it as needed and keep it at a mate's house or work. Encrypt the disk as necessary.

I want the convenience of backing up from home, sometimes I am backing up my Sd cards 2 or 3 times a week.

I've never had any Apple products so the icloud's a non starter, and I'm too old to change now

Sounds similar to my use case...I'm happy with all my local setup but I needed a cloud backup for the rare case that all my hardware fails, catches fire, gets stolen etc.

Check out iDrive ...I just point it at a data drive and it does the rest.

I've never had any Apple products so the icloud's a non starter,

Me neither, I don't do apple!

iDrive isn't iCloud...just do an internet search for iDrive!

Yes, old people have the most bizarre reasons for divorce

Actually from a data protection point of view it was pretty shocking, I had at my disposal a huge trove of data, names, address, family contacts, doctors, health records, NHS numbers, driving licence numbers

In hindsight I should have asked them if they wanted to buy it back

I made sure it was deleted correctly.

I use Backblaze https://www.backblaze.com/cloud-storage/pricing I have my working laptop doing live backups as soon as the machine wakes up, working away in the background or you could do regular backups yourself, I just try to automate everything so I don't have to worry about it.
I used to use AWS but it became outrageously expensive and still is in my opinion.
