Question regarding PIR sensors.

This is our back street. I need a pir sensor that will activate when somebody comes out the back door on the lhs plus when you go down the steps on the rhs.

This is the current setup. I had to use 2 std pir sensors to get enough coverage from the door to the steps. This has stopped working and I want to replace this with a single pir that will cover the wider angle, if possible.

The current pir is 5m up the wall and it's 7m diagonally to the steps.

What do you sparks recommend?

Location - I'd suggest you need to lower it down to get it to cover the area better.
Check the specifications, but just above the door would be my gut feeling.

Hmm, something like this might be ideal and mounted on a angle bracket near to the gutter downpipe.

I'm sure they work better when you walk across the 'beam' rather than towards it but I'm not sure where you could improve that, it definitely needs lowering though.

Why?

It needs to sense from 4m directly below the pir to an area 7m away at a 45 degree angle. A standard pir will not do that no matter where you place it.

OK, try this. The beam angle is slightly less. What ever fitting keep an eye on its IP rating.

Never thought of that! A fresh pair of eyes is always useful.
Not much extra wiring needed either, there is a light switch below that clock inside the building.

Would be looking at daisy chained pir sensors (one either end)

Got an alley at home with a pir on each end and 2 lights in the middle to illuminate.
This way if either picks up will turn the lights on for around 2 minutes (more than enough to walk through and get in range of the second pir to reset the "timer")

I need pir coverage across the street but the same idea as you.
I have 2 pirs daisy chained but one is faulty so I want to fit one that will cover all the street.

Why?

The white sensor looks like it's pointing to the roof of the building opposite.

Its pointed directly toward the steps so that the light comes on before you try to descend them in the dark.

The higher you mount it, the larger the blind spot below the sensor.
You will get further range, but at expense of the area closer to the sensor. That's why you have needed the black one to pick up near the door.
Most sensors are going to have 10m+ of range at the recommended installation height of 2.5m, so you shouldn't need it to be any higher than that.

If you drop the sensor lower, and move it further towards the back of the building, and then point it towards the steps you will likely achieve better coverage.
They also work better if things are crossing the sensor rather than advancing towards it.

Obviously you would have to be mindful of it picking up stuff passing on the front side of the wall - you would have to test positions and adjust range.
Positioning them can sometimes be a bit of trial and error to see how they work, but you can stick a bit of flex on them and clamp them - can hear the relay clicking usually no need to wire up the light until you are happy with it.

Never knew that. I thought by raising the height you would increase the angle of coverage.

Can you wire PIR sensors in parallel, so the light is on if any of them are on?
