New to me, R53 Cooper S.

Well, after the Scirocco ate its own gearbox, it’s gone to newer pastures and I succumbed to my uncles old Cooper S that’s been dry stored for the last 2 years.
Bodywork and paint is in good nick and he’s been driving it around the block during that time and he’s replaced the starter, alternator and battery and it’s last mot only expired in Nov so it was worth a punt.

The mild steel exhaust had failed due to being rusted through so it was a no-brainer to replace that with a full cat back 3 box Stainless jobbie from Malian at £278. I had £140 sat in my eBay account (doesn’t count if it’s not come outta my pocket ) and a voucher from eBay so I literally just spent £124 for a full system.

The car had an airbag light on and once scanned it was diagnosed as being the SRS battery positive isolator which had gone closed circuit. Due to this being non maintainable I snapped the Plug off the end and found one terminal touching the other and some green corrosion so it was separated and a 2.2ohm resistor employed to clear the light.

I’ll replaced the resistor with the following once it gets delivered.

Next up the dreaded MOT time.

Yeah, it’s fruity without being annoying and not much drone. I can live with that.

Well MOT time came, not too brutal, 2 x headlight levelling motors non operational, 1 drop link boot perished, 1 steering rack gator damaged and n/s rear brake line corroded.
£29 for drop link and boot, one copper line replaced and awaiting 2 used headlights £60 the pair.
As an aside the power steering hard pipe is pierced and weeping (£18 used from Kent Mini Spares) and both front brake line are looking crusty so I’ll change them anyway which may mean another couple of copper lines need to be made. Oh year, some metalwork on the underside will be brished down and painted but the was an advisory from 2 years ago too.

Been down my lads garage today, fitted the brake line, steering gator and drop link. Took a video of the Zorst while I was there.

Car now has a ticket. Mot day came and went with 6 major and 8 minor fails/advisories. Fails all sorted (brake line, headlight aim, headlight switch, steering gait or and drop link) and the worst of the advisories was leaking power steering fluid. Pin hole in pipe so swapped for a used item for £18!
It has 3 advisories left to give it a clean ticket which will get sorted followed by maybe another mot. Hate advisories!
