The American guy extolling their virtues seemed to be completely oblivious to the fact that the ‘Earth’ pin on most UK plugs isn’t connected to earth, but the neutral power line.

That's fine if you take a fly lead to an earth electrode. A bit restrictive though as you end up like a dog on a chain and you'd look silly.
