Steel suppliers- Your help please

I am createing a couple of pages for Malcolm-
The first, on the common bars sizes and sheet sizes that steel comes in.

The second part of this, will be a list of friendly steel stockholders or fab shops that are happy to deal with the odd DIYwelder coming in for a few offcuts.
I would appreciate some details of the ones you use, Names, addresses and phone numbers would be good, but just names and rough locations will do.

What sort of stuff do they keep, would be handy to know also, sheet, structural, non-ferrous....

Very diy friendly, minimum charge £5. They supply welding gases (I think it's Air Liquide but I'm not sure). They have a very large shop upstairs selling tools, machinery, fasteners and welding consumables. They have a 16mm capacity guillotine and a Geka steelworker, no pressbrake though.

Don't forget scrap metal merchants will always sell re-useable metals

Small stockholders handy for DIYers Id say as bars are cut to length, and bought by the mtr, Pricey compared with IMS but not really the same market..

P & A hydraulics, 01702 549241 often has off cuts of round bar to various specs, as well as CDS tube spec'ed and certified.... The owner is hard work, and blows hot and cold, sometime's he's helpfull sometimes not..

All these are in the Southend area... any good hitch, I know a few more if you want em?

I've used Twigg's in Matlock - they stock all kinds of steel but are also an engineering workshop so have offcuts which they sell by the pound - a great place to rummage - not much help to you in Somerset I'm afraid

Thease guys are as good as your going to get around here, the small stockholders and fabbers just dont exist anymore, IMS would be my first choice as long as you've got a credit card they wont care less who there dealing with a huge firm with a massive stock hence the lack of other stockholders..

Read Hitch's original post Cobs, he is trying to compile a database so all forum members can easily find diy friendly suppliers anywhere in the country or even the world. If you use them and recommend them, supply their contact details if possible.

They are the best supplier in these parts, as they operate a basic good price policy to cash/card customers. They only supply full lengths/sheets, and usually won't cut, but will happily lend a hacksaw if you don't have your own. They also deliver around the Lothian region for around £14, regardless of quantity, within 24 hours. You can order over the phone and pay by card.

They do bits and pieces. A bit overpriced, but good for DIY. They are a fab company with a wee shop at the front. Also sell basic consumables - grinding discs etc.

The other supplier in Edinburgh is ASD Anderson Brown. They have the biggest and widest range of stocks but if you are a low quantity user they really dip your pockets.

George Browns (Engineers) on the Shore, Leith, often sort me out with bits and pieces, and they cut too, but I know them personally. I am very wary of overusing their hospitality as they are a busy lot and steel supply isn't what they do, but they will certainly put stuff through the guillotine for you.

They also have a machine shop upstairs, one part of which specialises in engine boring/machining/rebuilds. You can just walk in. Its the only place I know that does that round here. Tom is the fella who runs that bit. Very friendly and knowledgable chap.

Guys I know have used Adeys in Loughborough for odd bits and pieces. Haven't used them myself yet, but they seem to be the people to see round here.

As for stock sizes, I use this site at work, which covers most BS specs of common tube sizes.

Always use these guys now for bits and pieces, fast and friendly service. When I first started welding they were the only local people in yellow pages who took the time to sell me a 6ft x 50mm tube and a 12" x 6" 10mm plate. Only £5 to them but I dont hesitate in recommending them whenever I can.
I know they deliver but if you live in Redditch/Bromsgrove.South Birmingham there well worth a visit.
