1.9d loosing power at high revs

Mrs just told me her car not quite right

Tried it for meself, shes right.

DW8, 1.9d, in a Berlingo......52...

Seems fine on the flat/lower revs but get it on a hill and rev it to around 3k, bellows out whitish smoke, looses power and sounds a little rattley. Ease off the pedal and it stops smoking, sounds normal again....

She assures me she hasn't put petrol in it again Niffed the tank, doesn't smell like petrol...

a new diesel oil filter and some injector cleaner in the fuel might be a good start without costing a fortune

Have you tried it on winter diesel?

It's not a gradual thing, seems to have started today.

White smoke can be a sign of water in the fuel or getting into a cylinder from a blown head gasket.
See if any water can be drained from the fuel filter water drain valve. Have a look at the end of the exhaust to see if it's wet. If it's happened suddenly the head gasket is looking the likely cause unfortunately, particularly when you mentioned it's rattley !

Sounds like loss of boost pressure causing overfueling, as its happened suddenly check for hoses between turbo and inlet manifold lose or split, can be ok at lower revs but leak when the pressure rises.

I thought overfuelling a diesel caused black smoke?

It sounds of either 1 or 2 things, it could be the EGR valve sticking, On my discovery the garage accidently left a EGR vacuum pipe off and that made the engine sound terriable, They were replacing the drive belt at the time.

But if the EGR valve gets sooted up they do have a habit of sticking, so check this out first. Look at the picture below, that crimped pipe follow the pipe to the right and thats the EGR valve

Secondly it could be the fuel pump, but from what you described it sounds like its a EGR issue

white smoke could be many many things, first off id change fuel filter and check for air locks or leaks in fuel lines, (little bubbles)

if its only revs to 3k sounds deffo sounds like a fuel problem, pump/injectors/timing, i also had same van same symptoms, turned out to be the pump.

was very pleased with myself pat on the back after changing pump, only to find i had to do it again because the pump had to be de-armerd, removing stop solenoid black box within pump as as its paired with other van immobiliser.

is it a d turbo? if so check for boost leak

Certainly no issues with turbo connections.

EGR was one of my thoughts, seems reasonably clean in there really, butterfly isn't stuck, unless what moves it is at fault.

Not always, if unburnt fuel passes into the hot exhaust system it will show white/grey.

It's not always obvious in small quantities, when was it last re-fueled ?

Quick test, draw off about an eggcup full, pour it on a brick, concrete etc. put a match to it.

Any sign of flames = petrol

Obviously do the above outdoors, away from flammable objects.

Small amount wouldn't have much effect, in fact in cold weather it's often recommended by the manufacturer ! Large amount would be easily sniffed out !

EGR usually throws a management light. It can be removed and the ports blanked to see if the hesitation goes away. (for trouble shooting purposes)

Theres a Dw8 partner 1.9l na in my workplace. About 2 months ago it had 18k miles and somehow snapped its T/belt. Result was serious damage to engine. It was dying down for about a month before it failed, and occasionally the EM light would flash temporally.( like poor fueling issues)
Although I don't know if the symptoms were interlinked. Only put it down to funny french temperaments. (I love french cars for the record...lol)

Also another weird thing that was happening with it was when it would die down (like a severe dangerous limp mode) If you turned the ignition off. then turned back on and repeated this it would run fine. Beats the hell out of me how that worked. (im more a petrol person)

I took a pic of the camshaft that was returned to us..

Might be worth a look. I dont mean to frighten you btw.

I'd be tempted to take the motor to a garage and have it hooked up to the ecu interrogator to see if there are any faults that have occured.

They might do it for free or they might charge a little bit for the privilege.

If it's a minor fault you can then do the work yourself, if major then decide if you want to tackle it or get them to do it.

agreed with tigler, ran my dw8 for a couple of years on veg oil with a few mods, @ 10% mix, much higher % will defiantly start to rattle.

Had that fault on my Xantia HDI, turned out to be the MAP sensor !! ECU read boost was too high, result limp home. Restart cleared it.

Sadly those days are disappearing rapidly, likewise a rag dipped in derv, set alight and stuffed up the inlet manifold when the heater plugs were US these new fangled plastic manifolds melt

Modern HDI pumps don't like any petrol at all, it will cause rapid wear, won't be replaced under warranty, if new, and at an average cost with fitting at £1,000 +

Luckily the DP pump on the Berlingo and the older inline pumps are pretty forgiving if a small amount of petrol has been added to the derv.

The rattle at higher revs, along with the white smoke, can also be down to pump injection timing problems, ie not the initial static timing when a pump is fitted, but the dynamic timing which alters the point of injection dependent on engine speed and load.

Thats the one good thing about pumps on common rail motors, don't need to be timed !
