Cheers. What's a good water valve to get? Preferably one available from Wickes, Toolstation or Screwfix.
They used grease to seal, so unlikely to hold the pressure long term
Wolesley's page suggests a similar one is OK up to 20 bar. How does water pushing against the seal at 20 bar differ to gas pushing against the same seal?

The downside with the Screwfix one is that it needs a screwdriver to operate. The one originally proposed has tool-less operation so something of the same concept might be a better alternative (Screwfix 29086 and/or 21860 red handle cheaper than blue handle).

A lever ball valve would be much better than a gas tap.
Those are just awful on mains water, I can't begin to count the number of them I have seen the ****ty plastic handles just tear off if there's just a hint of scale or corrosion in the pipes...For one of these? Suitable for water, with a handle. I’ve had one fitted to the water filter on my fridge for years, works grand, no screwdrivers needed!

That’s something I make a point of doing at least once a year, along with the main water stop cock: fully close and open it several times, make sure it does actually close the water off.Isolating valves - they all leak when you come to turn them off. People love painting them too for some reason.
A lever ball valve would be much better than a gas tap. But fairly bulky and not aesthetically pleasing if on show.
The problem is if you don't operate them regularly they can still leak.
They are the same valve underneath as the screw ones, just with a plastic handle - ours has been there 8 years and hasn’t leaked, maybe I’m just lucky…Those are just awful on mains water, I can't begin to count the number of them I have seen the ****ty plastic handles just tear off if there's just a hint of scale or corrosion in the pipes...
Not what you want from an isolator, at least the screwdriver type operated type is reliable once you find a screwdriver.
I'm thoroughly in team "use a proper ¼-turn ball valve":
