1980 mini 1000 paint reccomendations

finishingup the resto of the above. its on new wings, front panel, sills, and doorskins, the remainder of the bodywork is in good original paintwork.

I can spray in the garage at home ( suitably tarpauilned out ), but have read and been told so many conflicting peices of advice which paint to use that Im torn.

Options were between 2k, 2k plus valspar unibinder, and cellulose, but the 2k unibinder thread seems to have taken a nose dive.

Im favouring celly as I know I can spray that no probs, and Im not averse to the cutting and polishing afterwards, but my only concern is with it being a mini there are a lot of seams and gutters, and bits that would be difficult to get at with a buffer. recommendations guys ???

also, do I go back to bare metal or just key back to good paint and use a barcoat ??

I would take the whole car back to bare metal and start from there nothing to react just make sure your preparation is good
i would use cellulose but 2pack gives a better finish shine but you need a air fed mask nasty stuff

yep bare metal is best ...barcoat is for bodge ups

you say about buffing ...chances are if you get bad peel with one product you would with another anyway

cheers, yeah by buffing Id just meant the wet flatting and cutting back involved with celly.

Blackolive, if you can spray celly then you'll love 2K. Just get yourself an airfed mask or make one yourself. Celly is old fashioned crap that isn't in the same ballpark as 2K and is only for those super finnicky restorers that want to use original paints!

You may want to go to P&M panels in Warrington. They do an Industrial/Commercial 2K (sellymix by Max Meyer) that would give you a nice job and it's about £18/litre I think.

You need a decent second comp to power an airfed mask though, and the filter pack, not that cheap. Still cheaper than a pro job though.
What colour are you doing Blackolive, is it solid or a metallic or..? There's still cutting and polishing with 2k.

Sometimes celly looks right, like on some old motors, 2k is pretty plasticky looking. More durable and more stable though.

i used to paint the roof first leave it a week then mask the roof and gutter
then paint the rest less masking that way
