1st paint job

Hi all,

I've recently acquired an old K reg VW T4 caravelle/transporter which requires a complete respray. It was originally metallic silver but the previous owner had started to get it resprayed metallic green (front doors and grill), so as it stands its got some silver, green, rattle can primer, and the protective coating given to replacement panels.

Right, I'd like to spray it in peugeot blaze yellow (metallic), exterior only but with windows out.

These are the steps I think I need to perform but could some one give me a few pointers, and an estimate as to how the job should take.

1) Sand back and repair rust / dents
2) High build primer
3) Block sand
4) 2k base coat
5) 2k lacquer

Thats it in a nut shell. I would say that if your going to high build all over ok if its just in parts use a water based blocker so you dont have any reactions.

after rub down and repairs.barcoat it to hold back any reaction.
dont pile it on,follow spec sheet.

Obviously I can use the da with 400 grit to key the flat panels whats the best method to rough up the sections that I can't use the da on eg door edges, ridges and the inside lip of the doors where the skin folds over.

With the time available to me this project will take a month or so to complete how can I seal the areas I've filled and primed against rain/moisture ingress?

I assume I would need to go back to bare metal to use the acid etch, if the filler did get wet how long would it take to dry out again?

can I spray high build primer straight over the top of epoxy mastic or would it need flatting first, also is it available in a rattle can?

yes etch is for bare metal...i was assuming there would be some if you mention rust repairs

filler wet with what? etch?

high build can go straight on etch..epoxy mastic would need keying first

Sorry, should have explained better.

The van is in daily use and kept outside so it could get rained on depending on the weather.

I'll have a week off either august or september to do the final prep and spray but I was hoping to get on with the major repairs now.

wet filler is a bad thing ...damp will get in and cause all kinds of problems

most primers are porous too , id suggest whatever your left with at the end of each day gets a coat of cheapo rattle can gloss over it to seal it up for the night ....can be sanded or thinners off and carry on next day

You could seal with an Epoxy primer, It don't take in water and its anti corrosive and will go over most things.
