20 gallon pot

Hi all. Im new to this forum, so far lots of great information.

Am i right in thinking it almost does not matter if the cfm is low as long as i can get pressure up to around 90psi for blasting with a pot.

Obviously with a higher cfm, the compressor will not need to kick in as often, but can i still get a decent blast strength to deal with rust/paint on a car?

All thoughts welcomed, thanks in advance!

If you want to blast for 3 minutes in each hour it probably doesn't matter, blasting needs a large volume of air at a constant pressure to achieve anything worthwhile.

if u only have a 14cfm compressor using a 3mm jet by the time its presurised your pot you have lost some of the stored pressure in yout comp tank it will probably hold a reasonable pressure for a few minutes then peter out realisticaly u need a 28cfm compresor to run it at 90 psi the optimum presure for cutting speed and eficiency and the amount of media used

I use a 14cfm compressor and a 3mm nozzle with no problems. The compressor does run all the time though, so you have to make sure cooling is OK.

If i do bolt on a 3hp 14cfm unit will this give me sufficient grunt to run pot, and is a 20gallon pot the way to go for heavy duty car (rust/paint)?

It works for me.

The only difference between the 10 & 20 gall pots is that you have to fill the bigger one up less often, the air consumption is the same.

I only ever put 25kg in per time so it just has a bit at the bottom. I like the extra capacity the bigger pot has though, as obviously you get more air capacity as well.

1 think I have noticed though is the tank takes an age to fill Much longer than I would like, probably about 30 seconds from empty with the airline attatched. Its only 8mm bore and 10 meters long so going to have to do a 3/8s or 1/2 dedicated supply.

I have 15mm copper to within a couple of feet of the pot. There is a regulator between the pot and this pipe, thus the pipework is at receiver pressure.

The actual aiir in the pot just keeps it under pressure so the media feeds and air doesn't blow back from the mixer. All the airflow goes through the bypass valve to the mixer and out through the nozzle,

Good info, biggest fear is that it wont do the job though! What do other people use for rustm removal?

Sorry if i've missed it but what is the rust on? Is it surface rust?

My setup would easily remove rust.

It will however be VERY dusty. So get a mask and something to suck the air out of the cabinet. I use chilled iron because there is less dust.

For bodywork it'll be fine, however wouldn't you be better off cutting the rust out than just removing it from the surface? Ok on bottom arm's etc if your doing a restoration but i'd want to cut out any on panels.

if your using the presurised pot at minimum of 70psi preferably 90psi using jblast the results will be good .as long as the pipes from comp tank are large enough as not to restrict the volume and pressure and the media isnt used more than twice and the dust be sieved out on the second use
