20 Sided Dice

Another of my palate cleansing project in-between slinging filler and welding up rotten Minis.

I thought it'd be fun to make a D&D style 20 sided dice from steel but started out with some card and super glue.



Folding it all from one sheet seemed like it'd be tricky without some tooling and a press (my next project) so I cut out 20 equilateral triangle and pieced them all together.




After welding the seams I linished it down and and the DA over it. I think I'm going to go down a few more grades before matting it with scotch brite, painting the numbers on and lacquering it.

That has brought back some distant memories one very boozy night it was suggested we play strip dice and the numbers where 1-3 the boys took summat off then 4-6 was the girls turn we wondered why the girls where virtually undressed, when they looked closely the dice had been switched and it only had 3-6 all round it !!

Are you going to weld the numbers on?

Yeah you wouldn't want to fling it across an Ikea table, it'd probably knock it over. I'm thinking of make a 500MM tall one that I'm confident you could put through a wall.

This ones only 1.2MM sheet so fortunately it's not too heavy.

So I've not done much more with the smaller dice but I have done a test engraving with the dremel. I might try this and then fill the area with black resin but I need to do some more work.


In the mean time I decided I'd make a giant dice as a lawn ornament to practise my TIG welding.




The plan is to run a stake through the centre with a bearing top and bottom so it can be by hand.

Thanks guys. I was pretty surprised at how evenly it came out to be honest.

I did plasma cut all the plates around a template so I think that helped keep some semblance to tolerance between everything.

I stuck it on the scales today and it's just over 17KG. It'd definitely flatten a toddler is it got loose.

You should of tacked a couple of small weights on a couple of the numbers inside...would of made interesting nights
