2K over red oxide- yay or nay

Ive just finished building the chassis for my beachbuggy,as ive gone along ive been painting it with red oxide,My question is do i now need to get it shot blasted before i spray it with 2K, i was going to use a high build primer then top coat it, or can i go straight over the red oxide ??

if u want to go to the extreme a spot on job get it shotblasted . then 2k etch prime. then build up coat if needed smooth . then 2k top coat .if u arent that bothered topcoat with 2k over the red oxide primer if the prep is good enough

expoxy mastic over blasted steel then 2k would be bombproof

if you have brushed on the red oxide then there will be no point in spraying on a top coat as it would just show through every brush mark in the primer and look hand painted anyway

well it wouldnt look ideal , but the 2k is still a decent top coat to keep the weather out

Would you not be better with a hammerite as a good top coat it would be more durable

hammerite is in no way more durable than 2k paint , its one of the worst paints ive ever used

Next time Aldi have their metal paint in special offers get some. It's ten times better than Hammerite. Thin it with a spot of white spirit and it goes on perfectly and hardens reasonably quickly as well. I bought a tin of each colour when they last had it and am waiting for it coming in again to restock on silver or black as these get used for everything.

Thanks for your answers,the chassis consists of the tunnel and a tubular frame for the floor the underneath will have a sheet of 3mm ally completely covering it and the top side will have 3mm ally sheet as the flooring, so the only part that will be seen is the tunnel which i was going to attack with a wire wheel to take it back to the metal so this i would etch prime then top coat. can i use high build primer on top of the etch primer as there are a couple of hollows i need to fill where ive plated

Hammerite is only suitable for painting the inside of drainpipes IMO.

never painted the inside of drainpipes before do i take it thats money down the drain ? its funny how a lot of cabinets and machinery are still painted with it . it can be stove enameled as well . its total dross hand painted but if thinned and sprayed over a good 2k acid etch primer theres nothing better especialy when it can be got in large amounts quite cheap at autojumbles

If yes I would want to galv it first, otherwise epoxy & 2 k

no just on the road, im going with 2k- etch primer,high build primer then top coat.just finished the filling all the little holes and imperfetions,ive read somewhere that i need to stopper the filler can anyone shed any light on this please,waiting for me air fed mask to get delivered !!!im going to put a sheet of 2mm ally 5251 which is good against salt water /corrosion then 3mm sheet on the top for the floor out of 5083. I would like to thank everyone for there input and for a brilliant site i never knew there was so many different grades of ally till i came on here !!!!

stopper is a celulose putty bought in a small tin . u fill the imperfections up and pinholes using a knife , dont spread it on too thick be sparing as u only have to wet and dry sand it off
