3 phase hydrovane from vfd

Afternoon all,

I currently run a 100L Clarke compressor, 3hp motor belt driven noise making machine.
I was looking to go to a hydrovane, there’s a few 3 phase ones that are affordable. One particular I looked at was 3 phase 5.5kw.
Could I run one of these from a vfd? I don’t mind if I have to change the motor as well. But would like the performance not to suffer much.

Yes why not, probably give the vfd an easier time than the piston blower. But, I'm told you have to be careful not to use the pressure/speed control of the vfd to slow it down too much - it needs reasonable speed to get the vanes tight against the cylinder walls - apparently.

Pretty sure Hydrovanes run continuously as well so perhaps not the cheapest to run

Depends on the model. Mine has a tank and cuts in and out like a conventional piston compressor.

The one thing you would to check is if it's a dual voltage motor unless you get a VFD with a transformer. You will also need to set the pressure switch so that it operates the VFD unless you get a plug and play unit which will be a lot more money.

If you are someone who turns their compressor on once a week to pump some tyres or us a blow tool then a Hydrovane probably isn't the best.

They need to be run, you may find that a 3ph unit may be providing so much air that you won't be able to work it hard enough. You may also find the cheap 3ph units you see have done 100K+ hours.

Mine is Hydrovane15 single phase, it generates less air than my old piston compressor but the noise difference is huge, I can stand next to mine and have a phone conversation when it's running.

Yes this came about to conserve energy first editions were unreliable. Not an issue any more

Mine runs a plasma table. It's a Hydrovane 5 that I turned into the higher output 15 model by swapping the motor. That's the only difference between the two models.

I swapped the motor in 2018 and no issues so far. It's not used every day but sometimes I use it for several hours at a time. Here's the thread...
