Today is a beautiful sunny day in Portugal, so i decided to get some fun and train some welding positions in my backyard with 7018.
Im learning this at school.

1- vertical
2- t joint
3- horizontal

Is it normal to do the root pass with a figure of 8 movement? I'm new to arc welding, but I'd always assumed a narrow root pass to get into the corner would be the thing to aim for. What's the reason for such a wide root on the fillet?

Malcolm, couple of Q's - why do you think vlima has done a figure of 8, and where is the wide root? The wide weld is a capping weld (isn't it?). Not saying you'r wrong, more likely you've noticed things that have passed me by!

Vlima, whatever your weave, that's very good work! And good current adjustment - minimal spatter, as well as some fine beads.

youre quite right Drains, its a a capping weld and i didnt show any root here.

Sorry, I was reading the photos in the wrong direction. Welds are very much neater than I can manage.

I thought at first glance, 3 positions, that this was bound for the Brew Room.

Could I be lazy and ask the difference between, root and capping weld?
Where would you use each and why?

Oh and nice welds, what ever flavour they are.

the vertical weld is very good almost as good as mine lol only joking im not the best with mma im more of a mig guy. but will try to get mine looking like that
