40 amp plasma cutter

Hi guys I'm thinking of buying a 40 amp plasma cutter . Maybe a jasic to replace my oxy propane torch. What is the max steel thickness I could cut with 40 amps. It's only mild steel I'll ever be cutting.

Depends on how much you wish to pay, a 45 amp hyperhem will clean cut probably 16mm up to a 24mm severance cut with care.

A cheap Far Eastern 40 amp one might cut 12mm clean, with a max of 16mm.

I have a R Tech 50 amp I've managed 16mm clean cut with a max of 19mm, but I do need more practice...so it may do better.

It's all down to your compressor and plasma cutter, the more you pay the better the quality.

Regarding the Jasic you mentioned, the website says this.

I have the 80 Amp Jasic and it easily cuts what it says it can (25 clean, 30 severance ) so I would imagine the 45 to be able to do as it says.

Following on from what @Hood says, I have a friend who has the Hypertherm Air 30 which is rated to cut 8mm clean and sever 16mm. His struggles on 6mm clean and its not done any work so I would take their figures with a pinch of salt based on that experience

Plasma cutting is awesome if you have enough juice for the job. I have a 40 amp IFL and it really zips along sheets up to 2mm, and it's great for up to 6mm. It runs a lot slower from 6mm up to 10mm, and 10mm is really a severance cut... but it's still as good as oxy-fuel for me (or maybe I'm just not very good with oxy-fuel!)

At some point I want an 80 amo plasma cutter, at that point the oxy-fuel will only ever need to be used for heating things up!

Really I'd need an 80 amp plant and the cost is too much for what I do
