Hi everyone iv decided to make my own trailer my granddad made a trailer 30+ years ago 4x5 lovely trailer I still own and use it today

has anyone got any experience of building a trailer I would love to hear any tricks you may have

do a forum search on the matter it has been covered many many times. its also now a legal requirement to have a new trailer SVA tested before use. Do a google search and that will take you to the correct information.

I think the most important thing is to get the dimensions right before you start! The drawbar length and height, the centre of balance, that sort of thing. The trailer can end up a dog if you get it wrong.

In the process of completing mine now. Although financially it's not particularly viable, I fancied the challenge and am able to built it a bit better than a cheap trailer from a retailer. And make it just how I want it - mine has storage boxes behind the wheelarches, a spot for a tow ball on the drawbar so I can take bikes, etc. We're going camping on the day after boxing day (It being summer down here...) and I just have to get the deck on, wire the lights etc.

Made a bit of a boo-boo when I forgot which end was the front...

Here you go. The mini is only there for comic effect and because it's next on the waiting list of projects. Normal tow car is a Volvo V70.

I couldn't fit the trailer in my garage once I'd welded the drawbar on. The aluminium boxes I got from our equivalent of Ebay.

I'm not sure if the deck will be aluminium checker plate or ply, the sides and tops will probably be checker plate, but it's Christmas and funds are tight...
