50 or 100 litres?

Hi all, looking at the faqs and previous threads I guess the answers 100 litres but gotta ask.

Im looking for a compressor basically just for waxolying the Mazda Bongo I have, so whole chassis, to be fair plenty could be done by brush but would be easier to get the awkward bits and internals of chassis rails etc using a compressor with shutz / schultz (however its spelt) gun?

So, would an aldi special compressor sub£100 do this or am I looking at investing in something bigger?

Any thoughts / help appreciated.

Do you have much use for a compressor after finishing under sealing the car or not ? If yes then go for a 100 litres decent make compressor like fini, abac or older Clarke blue/industrial machine...

I had an Aldi special for a bit and the noise drove me nuts. Direct drive (compressor bolted straight onto the motor) machines are noisy the pump runs too fast, belt drive machines are quieter as the pump runs slower and it'll also last longer.

a mate of mine borrowed a new direct drive comp to sandblast his motorbike parts he killed it after 20 minutes use his mate took it back to machine mart and they replaced it im surprised because it was cooked

If you've got the space I'd always say that bigger is better .

My old 100l one overheated and killed itself and then @8ob was extremely generous and donated a spare one he had to my cause (see I am extremely grateful about it) and I've subsequently put it to more use because it can handle it comfortably. Sod to move around though and you do need the space for it.

After the other one was direct drive I have to say belt driven all the way - this one is so much quieter simply because of that.

Thanks all, honestly I don't really have any use for a compressor specifically, I fancied maybe doing a bit of spraying at one one point for touching up bits of bodywork but to be honest I know I wont because Im probably not patient enough to do all the prepwork lol.

I Gravitex-ed four wheel arches on my project car with a 24 litre Aldi compressor. It was fine for that job, but, as Gareth says, it is very noisy. It will also inflate tyres but doesn't have the grunt to do much else - it certainly won't run the air tools that Aldi sell next to it. It might run a small touch up spray gun.

I certainly wish I had bought a bigger compressor - either a high cfm 50l one or a 100l one as I could have made use of it during my car resto. I paid around £80 for the Aldi one, whereas I would be looking at £280 plus for a 14cfm compressor. If you really don't think you will want to use air tools, a small Aldi or Lidl compressor should be fine.

its very good, the only time its ever had to work properly hard was today, shot blasting a sub-frame. used it for a total of 4 hours almost constantly, and only had to stop and wait for a bit more pressure once.

oh, and got it early January last year, local to me on ebay, as he was broke after Christmas. winning bid... £80... and it was barely used!

Once you've had a compressor for a while you'll find you're using it for all sorts of things and you'll wonder how you ever managed without one.
