I currently have a 200ltr compressor at home doing alloy refurbs. The problem I have is obviously picking up wheels taking them back home and then returning them same day! Just a mad rush, was thinking a 50ltr tank 14cfm 3hp that I can bolt down in my boot as I don’t have a van or money for 1 . Would this be able just to run a da sander and my spray guns? just an idea to speed my self up with jobs, cars big enough for all equipment as I only do alloys not bodywork so nothing too big . I saw electric sanders from Mirka palm ones but too pricey for me any other suggestions on a sander if the compressor won’t run the da sander. Current da sander is 4cfm and paint guns are 4cfm also? Any help much appreciated!!

some tools do need to stop wait for compressor to rebuild back air up again

It would be good to have but I think I can only manage to fit a 50litre in the car need the extra room for heat lamps, paints etc. But I will get some measurements and see if it will cheers mate

exactly that and rims dont take up too much sanding not like a entire vehicle, get a decent sander that does not eat the air

Tank size is not what decides, it just extends the period between fill up. Pump output is what you are short of. Rotary air tools like DA Sanders and grinders are greedy things.

Forget the air da or get a small one with a low CFM you're never going to need a full size pad anyway or as mentioned earlier get an electric da, I've got one and it's cheaper and quieter to run

Most air tools quote what they call average air consumption, they rate them at 25%, so that would be 14 cfm if on constant use. I've been caught like this, seen 4cfm on the box, when you look at the full spec, you find its 16cfm actual.
for mobile work, id say you've got 2 real viable choices. 1) if you like need lots of compressed air buy an ex utillites van at auction that has an on board engine driven compressor, usally push button / or push button pull lever and you have between 60 and 130 CFM on tap quite a few will also give you 5+ KW of 110v to run tools. this way you can use all the air you'll ever want
2) buy an inverter use it to ether run corded power tools or charge battery tools and just absoluty minamise your need for compressed air, air tools are relativly cheep but compressed air is very expensive and very inefiicent you'll get 10% if your lucky

I’ve never understood why people always quote tank size when referring to the output of a compressor. You can have the biggest tank in the world, but if your air tool consumes more that the compressor puts out, you will run out of air eventually. The big tank merely delays that event.

And an inadequate pump will take forever to replenish the air in the tank making you all the more frustrated.

I'd second going with an engine driven one - I've got had a 'dinky' little AC compressor converted for on-board air for my 110. Slightly ridiculous for locking the diffs but did have an outlet in the boot - had absolutely no trouble running my plasma (in fact it kept cutting out because it was filling up my little 25l tank and the long air hose and plasma so rapidly). The initial conversion only cost me about £75 sourcing a second hand compressor.
However there was a problem with that one in that they're normally lubricated by the refrigerant and my oil feeder that was meant to drip oil in occasionally got blocked and the pump partially seized. The replacement one had a dodgy bearing which was swapped out on a hillside in the Highlands from the old pump. That 'new' replacement pump's electromagnetic clutch has now gone so I started pulling the two apart last night to build one decent one out of both.
However there was a problem with that one in that they're normally lubricated by the refrigerant and my oil feeder that was meant to drip oil in occasionally got blocked and the pump partially seized. The replacement one had a dodgy bearing which was swapped out on a hillside in the Highlands from the old pump.
