6012 rods: what about them?

Hi to all.
Yesterday I was looking in the INE website, consumables section for stick.

To my surprise they list a strange flavor or rods.
6012.

I have never seen this kind elsewere.

From what I found, they are a DC only rutile electrode (so a strange 6013).
Do they have other characteristics?

What were they used for? Why are they disappearing?

According to AWS the difference is that they used Sodium Silicate binder as opposed to Potassium Silicate as in 6013s. This makes the arc stronger so more penetration but more spatter. In truth there arent many rods that use exclusively one binder or the other. Therefore the classification is used to describe Rutiles with harder or stronger arcs.....and thats often in the eye of the beholder....stronger arc than what?
6013 predominates because its easier to change from one rod to another with the same classification

So they are not dying, people call them 6013...
It's time I start to weld something real again.
If I read too much theory strange questions pop out.

By the way, can any of you tell me some good book about the theory behind the welding?
