6G 3/4" plate V-Groove test help!

I'm traveling some 1800 miles to a new work site. I need to take that test.

I've taken it before for a code welding job on boilers and passed it. It has

been a while since I've actually heavy plate welded and was wondering what

some of the old timers would in reference to landing, gap, speed, settings,

and maybe push it over to the 80 degree tilt you're allowed to have in pipe fit

tests or so I've heard.

Don't know if it is SMAW or GMAW. So info on both would be awesome!

If you're testing out, you will be testing in accordance to a weld procedure sheet. Difficult to speculate without knowing all the factors?

Shoot, just noticed 3/4 plate, WPS should have all the stats required.

what is WPS?

Is it like AWS(American welding society) sets of standards?

WPS aka "weld procedure sheet" if new job is to a quality standard WPS will state the parameters for example, root gap, root face, angle of prep, dc or ac - or + tig root, fcaw or smaw fill and cap. And correct, to the standards of AWS, ASME, DNV the list goes on.

Oh, I gotcha. Yeah, do you guys have those certs.

I do have a huge book from Lincoln I got at a weld contest when I was in highschool, which I could look at, plus a few AWS pamphlets, books.

But it'd be faster if I could get someone on here to quickly guestimate some answers b/c my books are at the parents and I'm a few hundred miles away with no transportation. The holiday weekend don't mean sh#@! to me sitting here broke.

One will only be certified if one passes the test, sorry sir, not trying to burst your bubble but, having an LE book has nothing to do with you having to test out in accordance to a WPS, you stated previously, you have welded/tested out on boilers, surely you tested in accordance with a WPS? If I were you I would seek further info before driving 1800 miles!

I was ASME.

The only thing I think I know what you mean, runnach sir(not be an **** of course), is that landings I'm pretty sure are 1/16" to 1/8" depending only on preference.

Same with the gap. Which would be most likely be open at the bottom and closed at the top before the root pass.

At the boiler company welds just had to be xray and hydro quality, with the few standards according to ASME. These standards were mostly the same on every boiler which was, again, mostly just the heighth as far as I read on the prints and codes.

Good comment on the 1800 mi. thing though

The test is for pipe fitting, but also is the same test is givin' to those who the employer doughts' as a pressure vessel welder. Or so I figure with random **** questions I'm only due to explain with my knowledge and little research. Like "The Offspring" says Me, I'd rather be found, trying something new.

6G is a fixed 45deg pipe, you cant do plate in that position cos it aint round.

Plate equiv is overhead and vertical up.

3mm gap with 1.5mm landing, root at around 140 amp, hot pass just a bit higher, say 150
fill and cap about the same maybe a touch hotter.

Watch interrun temps and cold lap can be a problem because of dissipation.
