90 degree die grinder, noiser than straight?

Just bought a 90 degree Snap On die grinder on special.

Obviously there are gears in the head to achieve the 90 degrees but how much slack is there normally in these?

I've never had a 90 degree and I'm surprised how much noiser it is than my cheap cheerful straight one?

It may be that's just how they are but if not then I need to take it back

I have a snap on straight grinder and a 90 degree one both over 2 years old. I just tried the 2 of them back to back there and theres almost no difference in noise. I don't have a decibel reader thats just going by ear. if anything the 90 degree might be a tiny bit louder but only a very tiny amount

If you rotate the head on the 90 degree is there quite a bit of backlash? I'm pretty sure thats where the extra noise is at low speed

I have a Bluepoint angled one. No promises but if I get to where it is tomorrow i'll try to have a look.

theres a good bit of backlash in my 90 degree one as well but it doesn't seem to have much effect on the noise of it

Took a look at mine. It's very noisy compared with my straight but almost all the noise seems to be the air exiting. The gear noise is there but minimal.
Backlash can be felt by rocking the spindle in either direction - it all rotates too easily to feel the exact amount. It's only a degree or two. No spindle play at all.

A branded SO one should be better still.
Costs nothing to send it back under the two year warranty, even when they find no fault.

Mine says to grease the head every 8 hours of use. That'll be a long time away but worth mentioning!

Thanks Bill, I put Snap On but mine is Bluepoint like yours, mine is the all alloy body without the blue cover that some of the Bluepoint ones have. It's brand new and I was just a bit surprised how much gear/bearing noise there was. I think I will take it back, the problem is I don't use the local rep and I use one that's 2 areas away when I'm working there because he always responds to texts/voicemail and will always sort a deal out for someone not on credit.

I bought a new air cut off tool at the same time which is great as it has a reverse feature so you can change the spark direction.
