A bit of thrustboring ( no dig other than a start hole} we did today, 35mts of cable laying using our Grundomat mole. Took it under a patio, up a footpath,under a hedge across a lawn and into a carpark.

You don't - he was only meant to go under the patio but he ended up going via everything else in the process...

How do you steer it?

They keep straight in most ground. But light sandy soil with large flint's can be a big problem.

I helped a mate mole under my yard to a new shed,about 9m,he reckons a 1 hour job,took him all day,blamed it on made up ground,deflecting the mole off course.

How do you steer it?

In good solid ground like clay,chalk and soils they will hold a dead straight line, that was 35mts and aimed at the middle of the trench in pic six, only about an inch out and that was me being sloppy. No good in made up ground so I always dig deep holes to make sure I am under all the crap and other services.

It can handle stuff like this if the ground supporting the machine is good, it will and has gone straight through and out the other side of hidden/covered up brick or concrete manholes. Thats the baby 45mm one shown, we have a 125mm version, thats a beast.

There are a lot of service layers out there moonlighting with the short versions of these machines, they take chances and get into all sorts of bother trying to go shallow. Our 125 machine properly set up in chalk at the correct depth which is a minimun of 10x the machines diameter did a 50mt run and was within 6mm, thats not bad. I bought these machines and they are way too expensive to take chances, not lost one yet.

I sold my 45 mm one some years back once I'd got all the water pipes round the horticultural area. The rest of the farm I did with a trencher. Never quite trusted the mole - on one occasion I had to dig a mighty deep hole to find where it had gone

We were struggling to mole under a road due to rubble/boulders and , after nearly losing it a couple of times .
We hired one from the local hire shop and asked for them to show us how to use it - it's still there !!

A few years ago when diging a trench for a new water main in a recently purchased house we found the gas service pipe running straight through (across)a clay sewer pipe running from next door Luckily it hadn't caused a problem.

A friend of mine who did digger hire was called out in a panic to go and dig some holes on the central reservation of the A127 dual carriageway road as a company that had been employed to mole under both carriageways had lost their mole. Never did find it as digging was rather restricted. They believed it had hit an object and been deflected deeper. It was abandoned. Must have been an expensive day for the company.
