A few paint questions.

im getting ready to spray a ford sierra blue which i restored. i was checking ebay for paint and theirs loads of different types. In 2k their was acrylic, synthetic, gloss and more, which paint is for a car. I dont want rubbish for lorries and tractors. The passion ford site said i should use waterbase as its easier to use, is this correct? Could i have some opinions please?

you would want ideally 2k acrylic but there are health hazzards that come with the use of 2k you should have an air fed mask or at very least a carbon filter mask
also if i were you i would go for spirit based base coat as water takes longer to dry which isnt ideal if you dont have a heated booth also if it isnt completly dry you will have problems once it has been laquered.

also if it isnt metalic you wont need base coat and laquer just a solid 2k paint

thats what i thought. On the passion ford site they said dont use acrylic as its oil based and their would be problems if i had to spray later. Is any acrylic ok? How many coats of basecoat and how many coats of lacquer, if its better i want plenty on so it will last a good while. When i spray over the stonechip underneath with the basecoat do i lacquer it too?

Hi i paint cars everyday and have got level 3 nvq. Personally if you arnet using a heated booth and waterbased paint blowers it will take ages for the coats to dry before clear coating. Also if you hit a problem solvent based paints are much easier to flat and rectify befor lacquer. I would get 2k paint if its solid colour as it doesnt need clear coat or if your using metallic then get a solvent based put enough coats on until it has covered and then 1 extra as a fail safe, and finish with 2-3 coats of good clear with fast hardener and thinner.

water based isnt easier especilay at home/diy

nothing wrong with solvent 2k , and you wont have issues further down the road if you need to repaint it

be carefull who listen to on forums , theres alot numptys handing out advise based on the fact they rattle canned a hub cap so that makes them a painter

thats the word i was looking for in my first post but i could not think of it for the life of me the only word to come into my head was spirit.
too many years spraying the stuff, heads gone

My understanding is that a carbon filter won't filter out the isocynates that make 2K deadly. Carbon filters I've seen for sale specifically mention this.

Is it metallic or solid colour?
I've had good results with 1K solid and with 1K clear lacquer over metallic basecoat. I don't have the equipment to use 2K safely. 1K is also often referred to as "acrylic" but it sounds as though 2K can also be described as "acrylic".

Ask if it needs a hardener. 2K does, 1K doesn't.

I've used water-based basecoat without problems but only sprayed individual, but large, panels off the car (doors, bonnet, etc.). It does take some time to dry on a cool evening in an unheated garage but it worked out fine for me. The safer option is 1K acrylic basecoat, though.

hi - so just to jump in on this thread with aquick question... ford sunburst red - solid colour - best to go 2k then no laquer... am I correct? would be done in the garage - although I also have an infared heater.... ta

use 1k. no health problems then.
but do wear a mask.
