a list of the rods

im getting confused between my 6013 and 7018 and 53845 and my 5359583985994 rods

can someone put up a link or just a simple list explaining all of the different rods from alu to gouging to cast to gp to uphill to stainless etc

just a simple
6013-gp-not suitable for stainless or something would be great

also if you have got a preferred brand then chuck it in as well

You could look at the websites of the Electrode Manufacturers they usually publish data sheets (but they dont usually quote what NOT to use them for)

trying to be a bit clearer than my first post

i think around 30 rods would cover most of the situations

not interested in the really specialized ones but just the ones that you couyld come across in welding generally

basically i have only ever welded ms before so rods were fairly simple but am now looking to get some experience and then hopefully work using other metals

are there really hundreds of rods

im basically looking for a chart i can print out and stick on the workshop wall

doubt you will be able to buy most of the rods people will suggest and you probably wont experience many other materials other than ms.
if you dont know difference between 6013 and 7018 i doubt you could weld cast, aluminium or stainless so why should we waste our time?
look at bohler website as they do rods for every application with plenty of literature

i hve been welding for a number of years mild steel to a passable standand but now have a few jobs that could do with doing in stainless as it is to go through green oak

the reason i dont know the difference is that where i normally weld i am given a box of electrodes and welder and told to weld not because i have not done any welding

how do i know if i cant weld cast or stainless if i dont try

as said in a previous post i am not loooking to come up with a definitive guide to all welding rods-more of a chart to stick on the wall if i ever need to use/buy electrodes without coming home to use a computer

living on a farm it i entirely possible and likely that i will be welding cast and stainless as well as ms

You'd probably need just 6013's for most work; some Ni-CL rods for cast iron. Maybe some 309L or 316 for stainless (to match what you are welding.) 309L can be used for dissimilar (mild/stainless).

7018's if you want higher strength but they dont store well. 7014's if available are a substitute.

6010/11 if you want high penetration and are good on dirty steel. Lots of smoke though.

Beyond those, there are specialty rods. Wait until you need them. Specialty rods are very expensive (be sitting down when you price a box of stainless or cast iron rods.)

I have 6013's, some 7014's and bought a few cast iron rods (pack of 3.) I have never needed anything else. I have 6011's I never use along with some 7014's that I don't use as I don't want to wait for them to cook in the oven.

Right so we've gathered that you are not a welder but a farmer,nowt wrong with that apart from the fact that a lot of welders have had the privilege of having to fix farm bodge up's.......
As it happens before owt's mentioned,yes i do know how to operate tractors and a lot of farm machinery having spent an awful lot of my time working on farms but it still get's to me when farmers think they know things that they are actually clueless about!.
A passable weld?,by who's standards?,your's,a trained welder or a test centre?.
You ask about types of rods,easy,you need something welded ask the local welding centre or get a professional welder to analyse the job/metal and do the job!.
You say,i could weld cast but you've never had the chance?,********-cast welding is specialist welding!.
How do i know?,i'm an ex coded time served welder!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

You want a job done get someone who knows what they're doing!!!!!!!!!!!.

Your statement would sound great in court,soz guv but ah neva knew wot it woz coz i woz just given a box of rods n told to weld it up......
