A little idea

A big steel bench is nice for those welding and grinding jobs but quite a lot of the things I take on require the use of a nice clean wooden top. Along with those fitting type projects I get I also want somewhere clean to strip and service my fishing reels etc. I cannot fit another bench in the shop and I cannot have a permanent fixture up (again) I like having room to move so I thought a removable clamp type wooden top would be the ticket. I could clamp it to my bench when needed and stow it away when not.
Basic frame cut,squared and welded above.

Richard just to throw another idea at you before you fabricate too far...for my "clean stuff" like electrical items and your fishing reels for instance i have a 3ft square piece of 25mm thick granite worktop which ive clued rubber pads under it...clean and dead flat plus easily wiped clean

I've got a nice piece of wood too. I'd rather not sit it on the bench as it's going to be a clean thing. I'm too far gone now. Ie nearly finished so going all the way now.

What's that like for springing, btw? Might be worthwhile adding a drop down leg at that front end if you're planning on dumping owt heavy on there.

Nope I don't want to add another bit of steel to it as its light enough to stow away. Those clamps I made grab very well so there is no play and very little spring as its good solid 40x40x3 box.
It's more than sturdy enough for building a cooler, stripping my reels, laying out parts etc. bet it would easily hold one of your vices and not flex.

Put in a quick bar for the top to clamp to when needed. Job done.
Had it been for someone else of course the metal work would of been painted.

I have two of these filling a box somewhere but I do like the way you can move your little bench around.

Goodness me, I service and modify some expensive firearms in my shop and all I do is chuck a section of lino offcut on the regular bench. I used to use carpet but solvents and such get into the pile and can ruin woodwork, the lino I can wipe down. Rolls up nice and stores away in a cupboard.
Tell I lie actually its a heat proof cloth I use now the sort you put under a table cloth to prevent heat marking of the table (just a bit more pliable and soft than the lino)
What reels do you work on Richard?

I like the wooden top it fits nicely under the bench when I don't need it and clamps nicely to it when I do. I've got bits of rubber and Lino etc but this is much nicer solution for me. My reels are all shimano from different eras and types. I also have an old Abu 506 closed face.

Oh! I don't own a pin but always thought it would be nice to have one. My reels all get used and ain't old enough to be considered collect able. Most are around 15-18 years old. I have an old gtm from 1983.

Wooden tops are a godsend when working on soft flat components, ie. cylinder heads. Very forgiving if you slip.
