Hi everyone.
After many years of gleaning very useful information on how (and how not to) weld, I have finally decided to sign in. Sorry.
I'm not a professional welder and I don't even do a lot of amateur welding either. Most of my sporadic welding sessions are aimed at keep my Landrover's up to MOT standard, repairing off road damage or adding new bits on.
Warning! The following is about LandRovers; if you have no interest in LandRovers please skip this paragraph, there’s nothing here for you! I have three Landys; a Discovery 300Tdi series 1 (rusty) with a 3" lifted suspension, a Discovery series 2 Td5 which is standard and hasn’t any welding done yet (its not old enough!) and a Defender 90 Hardtop that is my work Truck and off road toy. I enjoy using them all off road as often as I can, which has not been all that much since our Son, Matthew, arrived a couple of years ago. Oh the joys of Fatherhood…..
Anyway, enough of Landrovers, what about my tackle; welding not wedding. I have an SIP Migmate 130, which could be considered a hobby in itself if the modding threads are anything to go by. At the moment it is standard (apart from a steel liner, that made a huge difference) although I have been reading some of the wire feed supply threads and will be tweaking in the near future! I also have an arc welder buried in my workshop somewhere. To be honest I’ve never really got the hang of MMC and I don’t even know what make or power it is. I really should drag it out and have a go, if only to perfect the skill. I have a Ready welder (basically a battery powered spool gun) that I bought for taking out in my Landy, for emergency repairs in field at Off Road sessions. So far I’ve never actually had to use it but I suspect it will come in handy one day. I also have a gas cutting set up, which is only propane not acetylene, so only used for cutting and heating duties. I would like to add an Acetylene cylinder one day and have a go at gas welding though.
I’m pretty mechanically competent (you have to be if you have Landys) and enjoy tinkering and making things/improving/breaking while improving then fixing again, so hopefully I’ll be able to add a bit to the forum, as well as learning more good stuff along the way.
And finally can I say a big thanks to Malcom for setting up the Website and proving some really useful info, video clips and tutorials. My welding would be twice as bad as it now is, if it wasn’t for your willingness to experiment and take the time to put it on the WWW.
Thanks for reading
Andy
