A quiet compressor????

I have an Aldi special compressor for spraying ornamental steelwork and it's as noisy as hell in my workshop even though it does the job ok.

It's the only thing in my process that could start the neighbours complaining.

Whats the answer folks?..box it in? or find a better unit, is there any small compressors on the market that are relatively quiet?.

Afraid I know very little about compressors so any advice welcome....it's that bad I have sent off for some Burgess Marine brush on enamel in the hope it will let me avoid using the thing.

u could put it in a box with sound deading quilt but at the expense of it overheating not realy a good idea on a small comp there all pretty noisey

Belt driven compressors are quieter than direct drive, maybe some form of acoustic enclosure could be built? Search the forum, one or two members have built compressor enclosures.

You could extend the inlet with vacuum hose and put the end in an enclosure, this will cut down some of the noise.

Clarke and others do compressors based on fridge motors which are virtually silent but have a very low cfm and aren't all that reliable.

Another option maybe a screw compressor, but again v. expensive.

Ive got 1 of the aldi compressor work really well but yes on the noisey side!

Ive put mine in a small plastic shed i got in the b&q sale for £10 and has worked really well just drilled a 2 inch hole for the hole to come out and let it breath.

Yes was thinking of something similar, It does not run much when spraying a gate so overheating may not be a problem and if it does and blows up then at least it won't be noisy again

The 'quilt' has given me an idea...I have one of those hot water tank thermal padded covers...could utilise that... thanks....will keep an eye on temp though

I built a compressor box about a year or 2 ago. Photos are on the forum. If I would do it again, I would not spend any money on sound proofing and just get carpet offcuts from the carpet people. A high pile carpet is awesome sound proofing.

Hydrovane is the answer. They just produce a moderate hum on load. Look for a 5 series, receiver mounted. They are produced in 1.1 and 2.2KW versions, a 2.2 would be nice.
They can be found regularly on ebay, at a good price with luck but still probably £100-300.

On all compressors most of the noise is from the intake, i'd address this area first.

My compressors were a lot quieter after I started using oil filters for air filters ,on the air intake.

Was there any restriction? I'm doing mine to a car airbox. with resonator etc still in place then mounting it out of the way.

that will be fine. a cars 4 cylinder minimum. i use a stihlsaw filter on one of mine . as said in previous post most of noise is from the intake

I use a Metro cannister on a 14cfm compressor without any problems.

RTB are those metro /mini oil filters a 1/2" bsp thread ? i seem to remember they are . i knocked the crappy plastic filter off my little sip compressor and plan to do a similar thing to your setup .

ok so now i know its not a bsp thread , how did you get that hose fitting onto the filter ?? might tap mine 1/2 bsp as i have tap and drill
