A really daft question…

Hi guys,

This is a really daft question, and I know I’m going to get stupid responses but hey ho, here we go.

So I’m doing a project with my wife. It requires a heatproof material that’s pretty rigid whilst still being malleable.

To me, that immediately made me think of my welding apron. It’s one of those leather ones but it’s not urethane leather nor do I think it’s proper cowhide leather.

I’ve attached a picture of a similar apron currently being sold at Toolstation (it was the first I saw that was definitely the material I’m talking about as mines like 300 years old or something) .

Originally I’d intended on buying a few and doing it that way, but the way they’re cut makes them almost useless and sewing them is going to be needlessly time consuming.

Does anyone know the name of the material itself and/or where to buy it by the meter/roll?

How ridgid are you looking for? Would an old fire blanket work? what's the project, and what temps will it be seeing? Flame or just heat?

It’s about 1.5x1m (there or thereabouts; there’s a weird notch in one end that I can can’t really describe the shape of).

It doesn’t need to be fireproof just heatproof.

Wife agrees that material is probably best, just don’t know what it’s called

A T-Towel can be heat proof, it really does depend on your project.

In general terms what you require is either Nappa or Split hide, can buy it off the likes of Amazon, Etsy, other auction sites and will come in different thickness, even thin suede might do.

All the above can be purchased in cowhide size.

If you are just looking for welding apron material, most are just cowhide or pigskin.

1Km square. Wow, that's a big cow hide....

My son made me a welding apron from large cow hide, I believe he obtained it as a second or third grade skin from here.
