A simple welding table

I just got myself a nice TIG welder on Ebay and realised I didn't actually have anywhere to do my welding, the delicate "Tiggy" stuff at least, I've always ended up arc welding on the floor in the past.

I had a steel plate that I got for free an age ago and combined this with the frame from a cheap workmate clone from B&Q (approx £22). I just dumped the original top and welded some angle to the bottom of the plate using my "Aldi special" arc welder so I could bolt it in place.

It is pretty handy, adjustable height, tiltable and it folds up, very stable too considering. May add some holes or slots for bolting stuff to it.

Smart job. Do the handwheels tighten tight enough to stop the table inadvertently tipping when you lean on it or put something heavy on it?

It is quite a nifty design it is not held by friction but by the shaft of the handwheel engaging in the "holes" you see in the curved slot. To adjust you loosen the wheel and push it in against a spring which allows it to move because now the threaded part of the shaft is in the slot and it is a lower diameter. Anyhoo the upshot is that it is very secure.

I probably won't be putting huge things on it in any case.

The B&Q website is absolute rubbish and does not contain half of the stuff they sell(such as the tiny inverter arc welder I saw the other day), I bought it on Saturday while visiting the family in York.

Is there a load rating at all listed for the base?
I could do with a couple of those to use as 'legs' for a static motorcycle work bench.

I don't have the box anymore but there probably is, you might be better with a pair of folding metal saw horses unless you want the height adjustment.

I did see one of those on a Youtube video actually, would have probably bought one if it were not for the massive hole in my wallet left by the welder. Didn't actually realize that it also tilts. The wheels are a great idea, that I will steal!

Well considering that was my first post, I think I unintentionally managed to kill that thread off quite successfully apparently

I don't think anything is dead there is just not much you can say about a table. Actually even if I hadn't taken inspiration from those welding tables I would still have used my piece of plate and made something. Of course the welding table people probably copied the design for the legs from a workbench like the one I have used Perhaps the circle is completed.

I also have a bust up back , left shoulder and generaly am knackered in both knees .

As a temporary work bench have a pair of Screw Fix plasterers trestles ( were £19.99 two years ago ) with wood planks for a higher than normal work table / light weld bench .
It goes from about 900 mm up to 1500mm and can easily be dismantled ... The " planks " are 6 foot lengths of 3 x 2 rough cut pine. One day I may put some hardboard on it as well as a thin steel sheet , till I eventually end up with a purpose built garage and work room etc.

The trestles are good for 100 kg eack , all you need screwed in each plank on the underside full width are stop battons each side of the trestle top bar for a bit more safety.
