ABAC compressor issues

today my compressor has developed an issue,

It doesn't want to start, the motor runs fine and everything runs free and like it should.

When I switch it on regardless of how full the tank is it just stalls when the safety cut out kicks in. The only way I can get it going is to give one of the pulleys a little helping hand (very dangerous and not recommended) and then all seems ok but then it won't go again when it's up to pressure.

What could be the problem ?

Ok, I changed some sort of valve jobbie device a few years ago as it wouldn't run, sorry don't know what it's called, but the comp hardLy gets used

I take it you haven't got a continuous hiss coming from the pressure switch when you have air in the tank. The motor doesn't start even without any air in the tank whatsoever.

That's correct no continous hiss and motor doesn't want to start even with an empty tank

Then check the caps and check that you haven't got a loose connection or something on the supply first.

Ok good stuff, ive done all the simple stuff like checking connections etc and all seems to be good. How do I check a capacitor ?

You need a meter with a capacitance function or a clamp on amp meter, as well as a visual check for a blown or bulging cap of course.

Ok don't have either of those, will have a look at the cap for visuals and contact ABAC, there just down the road from me

Has it got any oil in it? Have you tried disconnecting the pipe between the tank and the pump?

Handle a capacitor with some care, they can pack quite a punch unless 'discharged'. Check You Tube for advice on testing a capacitor, a simple test to reveal whether it is charging can be carried out without a multimeter.
A replacement capacitor for my old ABAC 2000 was about a fiver, a quality multimeter; although a really useful piece of kit to own, will cost you considerably more.

I've got a fluke 75 multimeter but it doesn't have a function to check capacitors. I will look into what to do with it

It's got plenty of oil and will try disconnecting the pipe, didn't think of that

Check the neutral connections at the motor/overload for signs of overheating or insulation feeling a bit hard on the cable as its a bit of a clue as the capacitor would have been slowly failing. Oh disconnect from the mains first of course.
