access to lathe?

access to lathe? anybody have one ....

does that fit the description of any body here? particularly north west based?

I don't know any of the engineering places in Bolton but need something knocked up.

Description...

single plate 100mm x 100mm x 10mm roughly with a stub in the middle 30mm approx bar sticking out about 50mm so 60mm to go through the plate flush

reason ..

was given a couple of years ago a ramp jack (sits between the ramps to allow you to jack the car from underneath when raised using the jack points etc) that had failed its safety check - wouldn't trust the jack to raise a smile yet alone a car.

but the top bar is in good condition, so me thinks that a plate welded to this centrally with a stub could be put onto a trolley jack as the central plate is stubbed as well.

working off the floor, so till I can afford ramps I am looking for alternatives.

should i put the straight jacket back on?

I can do it for you easily but im a long way away. Couldn't you find a bit of plate and some 30mm bar stick a hole in the plate and weld the stub in? Would be a lot cheaper than the cost of some 4" square bar turned down.

thats what I wanted Scott, knew I wasn't making myself clear, I've no way of getting a 30mm hole in the plate.

could only think of a lathe to get the hole in it plus I need to mic the stub to check the size and the hole has to be a push fit.

If have these then you should be able to drill a 30mm hole in plate :-)

I did some 29mm holes in 5mm mild steel in about 4-5mins using good quality dewalt holesaws, slow with plenty of lube, using my crappy B&Q 300w pillar drill.

Hi Ian,

sorry it was a bit hard to actually get the idea of the application(not being in the car trade) so wasn't sure how good this needed to be or how square it needs to be. Quickest way and most accurate would be find someone with a cnc mill and ask them to pocket a 30 mm hole in the plate. Fairy quick job for people that know what they are doing.

If you get stuck i am here as a last resort. I wish you luck with getting it sorted.

I have the time, others no

plus I am not sure of the exact stub size and want that a push fit, 0.005" tolerance maybe. with 1 ton on the jack I want to maximise safety

Can you not just weld the beam to the original jack saddle? I know it renders the jack useless for anything else but I bet you have more than one jack anyway.

with it able to spin it allows better access, some cars its easier to come in from the side than the rear.

I only have one trolley jack, dont need another at the moment and need to save for a portamig so a second is way down the lift, but I had thought about what you said

By saddle, I meant the cup that fits on the jack. That would allow it to spin?

Well, I'm not 100% sure, but at my son's house there is an old jack with knackered seals. It's a proper garage jack, not one of the little small ones. Want me to see if the cup is still on it next time i'm down?
