Advice for Vert joints on 5mm plate.

Hello...

I have recently started welding and I think I am ready to try a vertical fillet weld. I only use 5mm plate at the moment and I know to go for around 110-120 amps with a 3.2m rod, but I would like to know the method and technique of performing this weld, are there any hints and tips I should know about?

Also I am thinking of trying vert open corner joints in 5mm are they similar to fillet joints?

for root pass I don't weave, point rod upwards slightly and keep a tight arc, as tight as possible. then if I am only putting one run over the top for a cap I will arc on one side, right on the edge of the root, hold a sec, flick over, hold, flick back and slightly up, hold and so on.

if I am doing more than one run on top of the root I just run stringers until the final pas where I use the above mentioned method.

make sure you are using a rod suited to uphill, 6013 are all positional so will be fine.

the vert open corned is similar technique but I find need a few amps less to account for the corners melting in

Thanks again for your help,ive just got myself some 10mm plate from a friend to practice on will I have to change the amps or rod to weld this thicker plate?

You can still do it with a 3.2mm rod, you'd just do more runs and on a butt joint V the joint.
Amps settings are only a guide by the way, the figures given aren't absolute by any means.

I was taught to weave with a 2.5 on vertical up fillets. Pause at the sides, and then straight across, keeping a tight arc.

I've never tried straight up root run, I'm going to try that tommorow.

Get your Root in first , that makes sure you are penetrating right into the corner of the fillet , then cap with a pause at the sides , one tip is dont just move the tip of the rod from side to side move the whole Rod , keeping the rod perpendicular to the joint , hope that makes sense !

Hi Robert, You are aloud when being tested to tilt the plate 5 degrees, so a good idea when starting out tilt it 10 degrees or even a bit more to get the hang of it, once you've made a decent weld bring it vertical you'll be surprised at the difference,also test by cutting out about an inch ,sorry 25/30 mm and pulling over gently in the vice, if your a strong guy very gently if your vice is a cast iron stanley or record , you'll break the jaws Good Luck desmo11225
