Hello everybody!
As I'm a new member to this forum, let me introduce.
I'm an overseas enthusiast who has no experience at bodywork right now, but that I'll try to do my best for a Triumph
Spitfire restoration. Where I live this is a quite uncommon car, and it is the car that I liked since I was a child. Some
time ago I was lucky to buy one that was an unfinished restoration project. The car was completely disassembled, and most of
the panel craft was made (luckily for me).
Now I have finished most of the mechanical work, but as I was ignorant about bodywork, I left that for the end. And the time to learn about that seems that is arriving.
I have read some literature about bodywork ("Panel Craft" from Tommy Sandham, "Classic Car Bodywork" from Martin Thadeus and "Paint Classic Cars" also from Martin Thadeus), but I have some doubts from topics that I haven't seen there. So, If you don't mind, I'll seek for your advice in the future.
The actual look of the car is the following:
What worries me now, before going ahead, is the following question.
As I'll cannot keep working on that car untill december (due to my job) I decided to clean the surface from rust (most of the car was bare metal when I bought it), and give it a protection layer. I have read some threads about Etch primer and epoxy primers. It seems that both products are good for what they are intended, so I do not pretend to know which is best. I only want something that may suit for what I need.
I would like to know your opinion, as more experienced people that you are, about the following topics:
1.- Before storing the car until december, I'll clean the panel's surface with strip discs, with the aid of a drill and an angle grinder. Which grit seqüence would you recommend for that? Any tips that would be recommended?
2.- At the time being I still haven't decided what kind of paint will I be useing. So, when I'll get the clean bare metal again, what kind of primer do you recommend (Etch / epoxy)? Could I ask for a commercial brand or refference? Are you confident with "Eastwood" brand? If you know that, what refference would it be suitable? Some tips on how to lay it?
3.- As I have the car stored in a dry and covered place, will that primer protect the bodywork from rusting for several months?
4.- Some time ago I bought (via Moss-Europe) Eastwood's product "Fast etch". It seems that it is not a primer. What it is that product intended for, then?
Thank you in advance for your time and patiente!
