Advice on gas refill required ?

Hi,

I purchased a welder today and it came with a half size bottle (about 3ft tall) of Argon. As I need Argon / CO2 this is not much use to me, but I have no idea where I stand with regards to the bottle.

The chap said I should just say that I am on a job out of my local area and get it refilled. But havingread posts on this forum I don't think it works like that ?

Which company's name is on the cylinder?
If it's BOC then you'll take it to a BOC supplier, they'll say thanks very much, you'll then fill out a rental agreement and take a full cylinder away and they'll take your hard-earned wonga off you on a regular basis.

I will check again, but I am 100% sure it is not BOC, as the chap did mention the name

BOC, Air Liquide and Air Products are the 3 big players so there's a good chance it's one of them.

How do I get gas ?

Having bought my welder which came with an air products gas cylinder, I am trying to get it refilled, but have been told that th cylinder I have cannot be refilled and I have to pay £114.79 / year cylinder rental.

For a DIY hobby person, that seems rather expensive.

Anyone have any pointers on what options I have ?

go to yor local pub and ask your landlord nicly for a bottle of co2 for about 15quid

If you are in Dorset it may be one of our bottles as we have a number of distributors in Dorset . If it is one of ours ( southwest Gas Supplies ) let me know and I will swap it over for you .

Eat beans, lots of them Seriously you can go into the gas suppliers list on here and find a deposit only cylinder with no rental charges. They don't usually hold as much as the BOC and AP cylinders but they are better suited for occasional users.

I bought the welder from someone in Guilford. The bottle does say Air Products on the top. Would you still be able to swap it over for me ?

I ideally want a 75/25% mix rather than 100% Argon.

If it's an Air Products cylinder then unfortunately the only people who can exchange it are Air Products.

Is there a cheaper way of paying for gas are all companies the same and charge you a hefty annual rental ?

I thought you would pay a deposit for the bottle and get it back when you return it ?

Here ya go, send him a PM and he'll tell you where your nearest supplier is.
His cylinders are non-rental, you pay a one-off refundable deposit for the cylinder plus the cost of the gas then each exchange cylinder costs you whatever the going rate for the gas is, no monthly rental.
