Can some one tell me what ticket i would need to weld heating pipes,(the ones in boilerhouses like you would find is schools for example)a freind of mine has got a lot of work coming up and has given me first dibs on it,but i wont do the work my self till i have a ticket....The pipe in question will be up to 4 inch and no bigger oh and mild it is...so any help and advice would be greatfull cheers paul...

again codings are dependent on, position, process, pressure of system and size of work....... your have to know what BS coding the insurance wants you to carry, It could be positional TIG root MMA cap to 10bar steam....... a basic ASME single position low pressure coding will not do the job........speek to your Friend, If you know exactly what the work requires then the TWI can help you.

Iv done quite a bit of steam pipe, actually did a new steam boiler install this weekend, I make everything in lose assembles so can work it flat then just bolt up at unions........ Iv got some pics still on the camera in the truck......I looked at getting me ASME B31.3 or the BS equivalent (which escapes my swiss cheese mind), but the work I was doing didn't really require it, or justify the cost, It would have also put my insurance up to a huge premium, as they assume that if your carrying that coding you welding vessels all day every day, and if something goes wrong your insurance picks the tab......

Recently Iv welded pipe purely with the TIG open root, then cap, I find it looks better than the MMA route I used for years, infact even the boiler inspector, commented on how tidy the flanges were welded, but Its still crap compared to F/Js work......

Any Idea of the type of work your Friend is getting into?would have thought low pressure hot water under 100C would not require a very high standard of codeing.......

he is a heating enginer bye trade does a lot of domestic stuff,but all so does mechaical up to 4 inch all types of boliler room work,nothing too big if ya no what i mean...

lots of smaller pipes are TIGed these days, someone will have a spec or WPS on how they want em welded, once you have this, It will be easy to find out which code you need.......

what equipment do you use for your tig welding on site for this type of welding,i do a lot of tig welding at home i am self employed do a lot of prison stuff for a mate of mine,i weld a lot of 6mm mild with a single phase nexus t200 ac/dc good little machine i might ad.OH what is WPS.....cheers again mate

WPS= Weld prep sheet they would more likely tho just have a BS spec they want them welded to, you can then select the process yourself which you wish to do the coding to, even flux cored MIG. Machine wise if I haven't 3 phase to run the kemmpi MasterTig, then I just use one of the scratch start inverters, mostly as the Assembly's are all "lose", they can be made in the shop then just finished on site.......

yeah that is true mate,i have been looking at a dule voltage inverter today at a good price.....will have to look in to pipe business...Just took another job today weldin a recovery truck in ali i might ad so that wiill be fun.....
