I've just been practicing and wondered if anyone could tell me which is the better way to weld, the tighter overlap on the left, or the larger more circular shape with dimple..???

Of the two the one on the left as each dimple along with the more sharply stepped freeze line on the right is a massive stress riser

What are you practicing, overlapping spot welds or trying to make MIG look like TIG? The former has it's place with things like bodywork on French cars (tissue paper thick steel), i don't really get 'MIG like TIG' personally- doesn't add any useful properties to the joint, can reduce them and kinda defeats the point of MIG. I'm building a MK2 escort rally car and are welding fabricated parts onto the shell. Here is an example of what I trying to achieve as welded by a coded welder.

If your metal is good you would use short tack or runs instead of a lot of blobs overlapping.

Just make sure the penetration is as good as you can get. Your work always looks bang on.
