Advice Required - Fume Extraction

OK, after much ponderation I have narrowed it down to three methods:-
Sealey Fume Extractor model WS/94 or

Nederman Eliminator model 840 or

3M Adflo helmet

I work in a standard double garage with two seperate up/over doors and a side entrance. If I buy new, all are probably £500 plus and the Nederman most costly. I can see pros and cons between the mobile fume extractors and the helmet.

What would you do?

why not build your own, get yourself a good 4 or 5 inch extractor fan (you can get these from hydroponics shops) they cost around £40ish, build a box for it from 9mm ply or mdf, fill it with some of your loft insulation, a couple of meters of flexible ducting tube either end of the fan and away you go, all for around £60, it will move several hundred cubic meters and hour, should be ample for the job... its what ive done.

Thanks Steve. I think this may be the best plan. Nederman Eliminator 840 is over £800 plus VAT and Sealey Fume Extractor over £600 plus VAT. More than I paid for any of my three welders! I have a bad chest so keen to get this aspect spot on.

The Nederman site recommends 600-1900 m^3/hour (313-1150 cfm) flow rate depending on the type of hood used.
Look at inflatable blower fans as well as hydroponics ones above.
If noise is not an issue you can save some money.

Thanks Provenrad. I want to tackle the fume at source (without being too close to suck shielding gas away) but don't want to do complete room change type extraction (reduces temp too much). Good idea about inflatable blower fans.

Hi Nivag
Not sure if you sorted yourself out yet but I use a Miniveyor Air VAF-300 12" blower with ducting. I decided on this option as they are used a lot in the ship building yards and are pretty robust and last for years. They do a smaller 8" fan but all I see everywhere I go is the 12" one. You can buy a new one for about £350 on amazon.com and they come with a 10 year warranty.

Daz UK, sorry I have only just seen your message. Been mega busy and working overseas. This may be an ideal solution for me. Do you have ducting on either side of your fan? Have you got a conical duct for over the weld area? I fancy something with a magnetic stand or an angle poise type arrangement to hold it in place when working.
