Air fed spray masks

Hi all,

Im after some advice regarding spraying 2k paints. Ive got a race car that needs a freshen up in the paint department. Ive recently purchased a scott air fed promask with sperian airvisor 2 belt attachment, im now trying to source a suitable filter from the compressor to feed this.

Can anybody recommend something please?

Have been looking at 2 or 3 stage filters, are these required, or would a coalescing filter such as https://www.machinemart.co.uk/p/clarke-cat183-coalescing-filter-12---standard/ be suitable considering there is a carbon filter in the sperian waistbelt unit?

Its a very infrequent use, but do not want to take any risks with my health.

Its what the previous owner painted it with and the car came with, would probably still like to get this air fed set up working if I was to ditch the 2K and go with a cellulose.

Go with the 3 way, the charcoal filter will reduce the work the one on the belt has to do, which are far more expensive to replace.
I use a Cemco charcoal filter to clean the air upstream of my 3 way and the difference in price for the filters is remarkable given their sizes.

Nice clean, dry air to the spray gun is never a bad thing either.

Im considering a separate compresor for the mask rather than the same one for spraying so the filter and water trap on the spraying compressor should handle that ok. Will also guarantee enough air for both. What sort of life expectancy are on the waist belt filters? Its only a hobby usage, so if I have to replace the belt filter each time I use it, maybe once a year its not the end of the world, main thing is that Im breathing suitably filtered air. If the belt one does it and becomes disposable thats not the end of the world.

Air supply to compressor should be from fresh source (ie outside).

I bought a filter recently from a UK company.. they sold 3 stage filters for a reasonable price...I'll try and find their name.

Dragging two airlines around as you spray will get old very quickly.
Also don't overestimate how rudimentary the water traps are on compressors.

I would link the two compressors and route the air through the compressor regulator and water-trap before putting all the air through the 3 way filter and on to the belt, spray gun and mask.

I rigged my belt with a proper small regulator so I can feed air at a higher pressure than I need and do the final reduction on the belt.
It works well and keeps the air pressure (and flow) to the mask and spray gun constant.

This is the company I used for my single stage filter.....I was going to buy their 3 stage filter when I needed it but then I switched to using cellulose instead so wasn't such a big issue getting a mask.

I was going to get a separate clean air hose (goes without saying I know ....but worth saying none the less!)

When I looked around the price was pretty good I think for a 3 stage....the filter (single) I got from them was excellent (I couldn't believe the quality of it for £25!) but this was the one I was looking at getting for the air mask.

That’s a fair point about 2 airlines around the workshop, something for me to seriously consider - thanks.
As I said, it’s a race car so whilst a reasonable finish is required it’s definitely not got to be showroom spec plus my painting ability will limit any chance of that.
The last couple of time I’ve sprayed I’ve used water based but they have been metallic so need a lacquer, this is a straight forward plain gloss white.
The last effort looked ok (you may disagree when looking at the pic below ) from a distance, which is all it really needs to, by the time any championship stickers are placed plus any personal sponsors go on it breaks it up and the base paint isn’t the main focus.

I’m glad they’ve been recommended, I was looking on there earlier and it seemed reasonable but always better to hear good things about a company - thanks.

So I sprayed some etch primer on some fresh fibreglass panels this evening using the air fed mask and triple stage filter set up - what a system! It completely changes the experience - nice fresh air, kept cool and not sweating, no watery eyes or running nose due to fumes, I only wish I’d invested in this set up sooner.

Did you go for the solenoid valve one in the end....I'm thinking of getting that one so would be good to know its good?

I didn’t in the end, I got a metal work breathing filter set up, happened to be a second hand one with new filter set cheaper than the solenoid valves one. I’ve got nothing to compare it to, or anything to verify the quality of the air but I’m very happy with the filter and scott promask.
