air operated bottle jack log spliter

evning all. after fetching a landy full of logs with a mate earlyer i got to thinking (again) about log splitter. has anyone got any experiance of useing a air operated bottle jack? seen 20T ones on dreaded eBay for £60 ish and it seams a good way of doing the job . was thinking sturdy frame with the jack at the bottom and raising the log to the splitter. how does the jack retract i'm hopeing you don't have to undo the bung o the bottom .

ime sure they must have a double action ram mate..does the ram have a line in and line out as apposed to a single line like a press

looks like a good idea, I've just had a look on ebay and the jacks all look to have 1 or 2 return springs.

Something else to add to my long list of things to try!!

i did a bit more research and it seams to release them there is a normal turn screw on the bottom just like on a normal bottle jack. seams like a good idea as when i have air there is no pumping but if i don't have air then can use like a normal jack. with a bit of though i could also use it as a press

i like that but it does look very well seasoned might not be as good if it’s wet?

OK for soft wood but would struggle with hard stuff

Or you could just use a long handled splitting maul.

As my mate says wood warms you three times.

i) Collecting it.
ii) Chopping it up.
iii) Actually burning it in the fire.

i normaly use a spliting maul but with some of the stuff i get it does't work. also i have a patio and have all ready split one flag

Wont an air powered bottle jack be painfully slow as a log splitter?

That swinging one on utube looks a good way to loose a few fingers!

My splitter uses a double acting hydraulic cylinder. To have to faff arround to raise it twiddling jack screwswould be a right pain. I just have to return the lever above the neutral point. I've about 3 tons waiting on the field for me to log and split.

I would think an air power log splitter would be very low power unless you can get very high air pressure or a ram with a large piston area as the power to split depends on the psi on the ram piston, hydraulic is easier and safer to get the pressures required!
