Air powered die grinder 90 deg

Hi all I'm after buying a die grinder to use with my compressor. A 90 deg head version ideally. Can any one recommend a decent version. Will be used on classic car resto body work with roloc discs mainly. 3m do a nice one but it's over £200! I have about half that to spend. Is a £60 machine mart one any good? Thx

clarke air tools are pretty crap i wouldnt use them but it depends on how much use u give it and your budget

draper and sealey are ok but are just badged up with there name, i prefer and use desouter cp and thor but big ££££ if u have to buy new

Cp tuff is very cheap on eBay, any good? I assumed it was cheap tat....

I have a chicago pneumatic one someone gave me, it seems to be good quality, i don't use it a whole lot as i have a couple of electric ones. Possibily its like every other tool manufacturer, their stuff used to be good when it was made in europe or america, but goes crap when they are made in china.

I use a Mac Tools one with those 3M abrasive pads, bought second hand from the Mac van man. Think that it was a "reprosession". Don't know the actual manufacturer but it wasn't a lot of money and is excellent.

I've got a Blue point 90 deg one and a CP straight one. I use the 90 deg one for the roloc discs ( like you) and the straight one usually has a carbide burr of some description
in it. They both came off one of the usual Snap-on / Mac tool chaps when they had a deal on, free burrs etc.
The CP ones are good and you can get service kits for the CP stuff. Whichever ones you choose fit an inline oiler on your airline reg. I've not had any problems with any of my (many) air tools probably due to the lube.

The clark ones have good air motors but the head/gearbox is crap I wasted a couple at work as the old boss wouldn't pay out for a better one, He's gone and the guy who orders the tools knows better he got me a 3M one with a 80deg head and the holder/mandral for the pads attaches direct to the ouput shaft so it's real short but came with a collet adaptor so the odd job needing the collet makes it normal size.

On a budget I can recommend universal tools air tools, I got my 90° for £50. Great little grinder, model ut5715. Adjustable speed too.

Was given a UT air drill at work and it's pretty good too.

Personally I would stay away from the likes of Clarke, silverline, sealey etc, if it is going to see heavy use then spring for something from the likes of CP, desoutter or Atlas copco.

I bought a couple of these, mainly because they have insulated handles to cut down on vibration and dont get so cold with continued use.

I have a Univesal extended UT5761, brand new never used. Google it and let me know if you may be interested, Used their tools for a while, not cheap but top gear IMO.

Gerry, there are different tools which fit die grinders, some of which are as follows.

Mounted points are for grinding and polishing and can be vitrified (like a bench/pedestal grinder wheel), resinoid (angle grinder disc), or cotton (polishing mop). There are porbably more, I'm no expert, have a look at the links below -

Rotary burrs are typically tungsten carbide and are for rapid metal removal. There are different ones for ferrous and non-ferrous, particularly ali where they look far more coarse but this is to stop them clogging. Be warned, using a burr on streel can produce thousands of razor/sharp shards of metal, so wear eye protection and try no to get any down yer boots !

Hi Browser..thanks for all the info! I bit the bullet and bought a Kobo grinder. Haven't had a chance to use it but did find a couple of old 6mm shaft grindstones from way back in my 'junk'. Only thing I have noticed is that it's very easy to stop by hand...not sure if this is normal?? Anyway, I'll take a good look through your links..cheers Gerry
